Cross Country trip

I have been putting on a lot of miles on our cross country trip. Gps has worked pretty well except lost signal up on Owl Creek Pass and Chimney Rock CO.I think Samantha got scared.

Here are some pictures we have taken. Warning a lot of them.

Nice Trip - Nice Photo

It looks like you're taking in ALL of the sites. You're pictures from Colorado are interesting. My fear of heights would likely prevent me from travelling Mt. Evans, and you won't find me standing on the edge of a cliff exclaim

Enjoy the trip and have a safe journey!

lost signal

when my daughter and I took a trip to the Emerald Creek Star Garnet area in Idaho last year there were a few times we lost GPS signals, interesting feeling.

Beautiful pictures

Thanks for sharing them with us smile

We've been there a few times and it is beautiful. Not very big but if you get down into it either hiking or on horseback, the rock formations and color are magnificent. It can be either extremely hot or extremely cold, depending on the time of year.

On the road

We have not gotten to Bryce Canyon yet.About two hours from it.Stopped in Salina UT for the night.May stay another night and go to Bryce Sunday.Maybe easier to get a room and some of the crowd will be gone.A lot of people out traveling.Who says no one is spending?

Enjoyed Canyonlands. What a sight to see.Enjoyed every minute of it.Added pictures to the link http://cid-db736bc4d2a54a27.photos.live.com/play.aspx/Utah%2... if any one is interested.Driving down the scenic I70 interstate was great.Didn't make much time because we kept stopping to take pictures. They have a rest spot with scenic lookout every few miles. Can't wait to get to Bryce Canyon after reading your feedback.

Southern Utah

I find the geology of Southern Utah amazing - there sure is a lot to see in a relatively small geographic area! We have many of the same pictures...

From your description it looks like you will be looping back south to get to Bryce Canyon. I hope you will have a chance to swing down to Zion Canyon and the Lake Powell area.

Silverlight

I would like to see your pictures but don't want any more Microsoft software. Is there another way of seeing them without downloading Microsoft Silverlight? I have plenty of photo viewers and don't need another.

The trip is going good and the scenery is great.Turn a corner and think you have already seen it all and there is something new.

The Nuvi 265wt has been doing a good job.One thing that has come up a few times that I have noticed. The latest coming down I70 showed me getting off at a exit 40 miles down the road.Stopped at a scenic overview without turning off the gps.Next thing the gps nows shows me going 80 miles down the interstate. The arrival time was reduced by 30 minutes which was great.Turning off the gps or re-selecting the location may be good once in a while.Especially for a location with a lot of miles.

Good places to go in Wisconsin:

Old Country Cheese Factory, rural Cashton, WI - (N43.71028 W90.72146) - it's in Wisconsin's Amish Country - on the winding roads to get there, one is likely to encounter horse drawn carriages, and wagons - and coming soon, harvesting done the old fashioned way - as in pre-tractor. There is nothing like cheese curds fresh from the vat, still warm, and freshly bagged.

Then venture to Westby, WI - (N43.65120 W90.85877) - more cheese...

And, now into fall: Apples! The area along WI state highway 101 at its intersection with US-61 (N43.32695 W90.74153) and West to Gays Mills, WI (N43.31316 W90.84234) is a fine apple growing area - with several orchards along the way - Sunrise Orchard (N43.31763 W90.83117) is my favorite. Their apple doughnuts are to die for.

If you plan to go to either of these places any time soon. You will have lots of delays.New bridge and road work at Hoover Dam and road work at Grand Canyon. Many of the scenic overlooks closed at Grand Canyon.Still can see a lot past the visitor center heading to the Grand Canyon Village area.Waited 45 minutes just to get in due the road work.Luckily by the time we left the contractors had went home.

Retirement trips

Nice trip. Barbara & I did it in 06. We visited the Anasazi & New Mexico pueblo sites and a private tour of Monument Valley. Then looped around to Vegas & picked up the daughter at the airport. Then off to Zion & Lake Powell. Then we went down into the Grand Canyon on mules and stayed at the Phantom Ranch. We went to Sedona for some shopping, then back to Vegas to see Carrot Top & all the street acts on Fremont BLVD. We put Debbie back on a plane. Then off to Bryce, Arches, Mesa Verde, Durango & Silverton CO. Then Wolf Creek Pass that still had snow in mid June, then back to Illinois.
Barbara had read all the Tony Hillerman books but had never been out West. The trip made it special to visit the many Navaho locations in those novels.
I know you are enjoying it as much as we did.

Trip in AZ, UT and NV

Like CHARLESD45, my wife and I are planning a trip to Arizona, Utah and Nevada for early October. We would fly to Phoenix and rent a car. Currently, the plan is as follows:
Phoenix, AZ
Jerome, AZ
Sedona, AZ
Flagstass, AZ
Kanab, UT
Zion Canyon, UT
St George, UT
Las Vegas, NV
and back to Phoenix.

We will be traveling 9 days.

Any comments about those places? Anything else we should see?

Jerome AZ

@ JGL: That is a spectacular drive from Jerome to Sedona. Along the way is the town of Clarkdale. We enjoyed the train ride up the Verde River Canyon. At the Grand Canyon Village, shuttle buses make many stops along the South Rim. Late afternoon & early morning are great for photography at many of the spots. California Condors are a very popular attraction in the afternoon at the Village. I needed a longer lens though.
That sounds like a great nine day trip.

On the way

On the way from Flagstaff to Kanab you should make time to stop at Page and take the boat excursion on Lake Powell. A truly amazing trip.

Also if you have time, Bryce Canyon National Park is well worth the drive.

Have a great trip, you've planned one of the most beautiful road trips in the US.

Not sure if your doing any preplanning as far as how far you want to drive each day or where you want to spend your nights but if you have never used it before, Micosoft's Streets & Trips 2010 software is really good for this. You can also print off the maps and directions which end up looking much like AAA Triptiks.

You can obtain a full version of the software on a 60 day trail from http://www.microsoft.com/streets/en-us/default.aspx and click on Free Trial at the top of the page.

Streets & Trips

I completely agree with you. Even with a Garmin (Nuvi 750), Streets & Trips is extremely useful in planning a trip like we are doing. I have been using it for more than 10 years. I also used the European version (Autoroute) when I spent 2 years in Luxembourg / Belgium 8 years ago.

The beauty of the package is that you can see on a map the impact of the side trips you want to take. And at the end, when everything is "finalized", you just have to export to a GPX file, move the file to your Garmin unit and import it to create a Route on the Garmin.

INVALUABLE tool!!

enjoy

Sounds like a great trip. Thanks for sharing and stay safe.

Rocky Mtn NP

How did you get through Rocky Mt. NP without a picture of an elk?

I believe your Mt Goat is a Bighorn Sheep.

I agree Bryce Canyon is spectacular.

Thanks for sharing.

I never seen a Elk in Rocky

I never seen a Elk in Rocky Mtn.Thought for sure that I would have to stop the car to let them cross the road, but no such luck. The park is beautiful and I would suggest anyone traveling that way to go there. They will not be disappointed. My wife took that picture of the Big horn Sheep while sticking her head out of the car window with the camera. It was just standing there in one of the pull off areas.

Didn't even see Antelope like we use to riding through some of the states.

Almost home

Just about to finish our cross country trip.Staying over in Wytheville VA about 6 hours form home.I have to say well pleased with my 265wt.It did the job.I could kiss Samantha for getting me through Nashville with all the turns for I-40.Going to all the places we did with he gps paid for itself many times over.Nothing like saving the hotel as a favorite so you can find your way back when you have checked out new places and have no idea how to get back.I think I used every feature on the unit.As stated earlier using the feature to search for a hotel or restaurant along the route or the end destination was great.Rest stop alerts worked very well as as did other custom poi files I used. The internal pois used were right on target and came in handy more then once.

Got to see many places with outstanding scenic views. This was our 3rd trip and will have to plan a 4th in the future.A lot to see and enjoy in the USA.
