Bug in POILoader 254?

I successfully ran POILoader on my XP/pro.sp3 laptop (although I haven't been able to get GHayman's MyHome POI sample to work yet).

I am trying the same thing using my Windows 7/64 bit PC but keep getting an error msg saying Windows cannot find c:\Garmin\sox.exe.

Well naturally it can't find it. I have POILoader installed on my D:\Garmin drive, not my C:\ drive and consequently have sox.exe loaded in the appropriate place.

This looks like a bug in POILoader to me.

Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Illiterate? Write for free help.

Roll with the flow?

I'd roll with the flow and drop a copy of sox.exe in the C:\Garmin folder (making one if it isn't there already).

I had previously kept POILoader on another hd myself, but noticed that this last upgrade forced itself into C:\Garmin without asking.

Double check the shortcut link also..you might have two versions of POILoader now, like I do. shock

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

If you do a search all you need to know is already here

Try this search and you should find what you need to solve the problem:

http://www.poi-factory.com/search/node/sox.exe

I run POI Loader 2.5.4 with no compatiability mode turned on in both my Windows 7 64 bit and 32 bit computers with no problems.

Son of a gun. Sure enough, it's installed in my C:\Garmin drive and my D:\Garmin drive. How the heck did it get there? (I try to keep my c:\ just for OS related stuff.)

They all show the same date of Sept 17, 2009. How can I safely get rid of one without the other? Wonder if I go through an uninstall routine if it will take out both POIloader.exe programs? Then I could just reinstall it.

I just gave up with Garmin

I'd just leave it.. I used to try to keep my C: drive for just OS stuff, but then along comes poorly written installers (like from Garmin & others) and I spent too much time trying to re-tweak. A lot of this stuff makes registry entries that you need to manually change, and it's too much of a pain in the long run, imo.

My quick guess is that the simple solution would be to delete the D: drive progs & folder and just use C:\Garmin, or maybe try removal via add/remove progs & see what your remaining shortcuts go to and what your registry entries are afterwards. Then maybe you can change any registry entries that are using C:\Garmin to your D: location, cross your fingers & reinstall the new version. But my gut feeling is that the new version install is hard-coded to install into C:\Garmin.

Another possibility might be to change the current registry values from C:\Garmin to your D: drive, copy the new POILoader files from C into D, change the shortcut & see if it all works. Then delete the prog files from C:\Garmin. But.. you might find MapSource on C:Garmin as well, so you have all that to deal with too.

Life is short. Roll with the flow and send Garmin hate mail, imo.

take the..

take the free non-garmin advice on this site, it's just as good as the pro's.

POILoader installation directory

OK, time for me to fess up. I've been scratching my head trying to figure out how the heck I ended up with multiple installations of POILoader. Spent a lot of time with Garmin tech support too.

Item 1: Garmin verified that their software installs to the C drive and does not offer the option to install elsewhere. (that should have given me a clue).

Item 2: I belatedly realized that I sync'd my PC to my laptop (which I'd been working on for the last week.) When I did that, it brought over the new POILoader.exe and dll files due to how I had the sync program set up.

My bad.

I uninstalled the C:\POILoader program. The files were still in my D:\ drive. I simply deleted them. I reinstalled POILoader and now all is well.

Except that I can't get Redlight POIs to light up my screen as expected... nor will the wav file play as the alert I intended. But that's another thread.

Sorry for the false alarm.
