Lane Assist / Junction View

I just converted from a C530 to a Nuvi 1450 and am very happy with the new box. What I haven't been able to figure out yet are how the Lane Assist and Junction View functions work.
The vast majority of time when I'm merely navigating from Point A to Point B, I use one of my custom POI's. All of my custom POI's are in .csv files, so I pick the one I want and away I go.
With the new 1450 I was hoping for some dramatic new sizzle with LA/JV functions but so far I haven't seen ANY. I've yet to be able to see those functions actually working. And of course the Garmin User's Guide remains useless so maybe I just don't know how to use LA/JV.

So. What do I need to do to enable those functions? I live in the Cleveland, Ohio, area and from a post that's nearly a year old, I know LA/JV should work here.

1) Are those functions automatic? That is, if the geographic area has it and my GPS has it, should it just work?
2) Does it work with .csv custom POI's?
3) How do I know when I enter an area where LA/JV is working at that moment? I's there an audible or visual alert?
4) What's the difference between Lane Assist and Junction View?

Thanks for the help.

LA and JV

I don't know about LA&JV with your custom POIs, but I would assume it would work with those like any other destination. Don't know why it wouldn't.

Here's a url that includes pics illustrating LA and JV.

LA/JV

This is what I know, it seems to only work when you are using a planned route and travel where they have photos. My 755T has it and if I run it in view mode all I get is standard views. If I us a route (755T can save 10) then I get LA/JV but only at major interstate interchanges of more than 3 lanes. I was surprised that the exit signage was for that intersection and not generic. The LA/JV display does not last long. I've also had my unit reboot immediately after displying the LA/JV info. Still investigating why this happened. Since going to a POI create a route then the LA/JV should work if you are traveling on a interstate (multi lane with multi lane exits)to the POI.

LA/JV

I am using the 1490T. The LA appears in the upper right corner. I don't always notice it but it seems to always be there if the road has more than 2 lanes in each direction. JV only appears if the map has the pictures associated with that junction. I mostly see the JV on the highway and sometimes see it on smaller "major" roads.
All in all, both seem to work well for me.

Garmin describes it as

What is Junction View?

Answer:
Junction View is a navigational aid that displays the appropriate lane you should be driving while in an active route. Junction View is not available in all areas and can be found on many intersecting interstates in major metropolitan areas.

As noted, Lane assist appears in the upper left. My feeling that the reason junction view is not seen by many is that there is not a "junction" in their area. I also think that, for a "junction" to show, there must be 3 possible paths one could choose ahead.

A way to see what this looks like on your unit is to let your unit calculate a route through some major city (one that has multiple interstates intersection each other) to some final destination point past the major city. Once the "GO" route is calculated, tap the top bar so that you put yourself into turn by turn mode. Use the down arrow to progress through the trip and watch for the junction view to appear.

Junction View

I have this feature on my 765T and on my 1390T. It works automatically in an area where it is needed. I seldom see it unless I'm driving in a major city area - ie: I see it quite a bit when I go to Atlanta, Georgia. In most cities that have only a couple of Interstate Highways, it doesn't appear.

Lane Assist and Junction View

I have a Nuvi 1690 and I assume it works much like a 1450. The lane assist is in the upper left corner. If I am driving from Phoenix Arizona to Flagstaff Arizona, it will tell me what lanes I should be in when going onto a new freeway/highway. If there are 2 lanes of more, it should show all the lanes and highlight the lanes you should be in and grey out the lanes you should not be in. That is lane assist and I don't have to set up anything special to get it to work. Also, it should show and arrow on which way you will be turning.

For the Junction View, I rarely see it. I have seen it driving from Arizona to California and it comes up for a brief moment and goes away. There are no beeps to let you know it is coming. I looks just like the signs on the freeway. It's pretty cool when it comes up.

Lane Assist and Junction View

Just got a 1450. Lane Assist and Junction View is not available in my area (Melbourne, FL). However, two weeks ago, I drove to Orlando and Lane Assist and Junction View were available and were automatically displayed on the screen. It worked well and I think it's a good tool to have.

not much LA in Albuquerque

I have the latest update map on my 855. Here in Albuquerque, I never saw an LA at all until one or two updates ago. Now I see it for a couple of directions (not all) on a few interstate intersections. It is not even present for all four directions through the major "Big I" intersection of I-40 and I-25. I assume this feature should get implemented on more intersections in the future.

I was in Cleveland (where I grew up 1960-67 for a wedding a year ago. I'd have really appreciated LA more than one place.

LA versus Junction View

I hope that your 855 always shows you "LA" in the upper left corner of you unit. On page 6 of the manual it says: "The upper left corner indicates the distance to your next maneuver and the lane you should be in for the maneuver"

On the front of your manual is a picture of a juntion view.
