If you don't try to calculate a route, and just show the screen, does it have maps?

Sounds like your maps got either deleted or unselected.

Hopefully, it's the second one and not the first one.

You don't say what unit you have but go to Settings/Wrench > Map > Map Info and see if the maps are listed and if they are checked.

its a nuvi 780.
on the map screen, the map info section is in a gray color..

It sounds like your basemaps have been deleted, or corrupted. Plug your unit into the computer, and see if you can find the gmapbmap.img file.

If you have a backup, then compare that backup with the current contents of your GPS.

It sounds like you deleted your detailed maps. The file you are looking for is named GMAPPROM.IMG.

If you don't have a backup, you will need to contact Garmin for service.

Do you have the lifetime updates, or a backup of a map download? You should be able to reinstall it.

It may be able to recover the files.

Is the basemap locked to an individual GPSr like the detailed maps are? It may be possible to just copy the basemap from another unit. It wouldn't fix everything but it's a start.

Did you just purchase this unit used? Did this happen after a software upgrade?

Just to correct a few points.

A couple of people have referred to the maps as "the basemaps." That is the incorrect term.

The unit has a basemap which is a very basic map and is in a file named "GMAPBMAP.IMG".

The detailed maps are different. They are in a file named "GMAPPROM.IMG".

And you cannot just copy the map from another unit. Not only is that a violation of the EULA, it won't work anyway because the maps are locked to the original unit.

Typing in ALL CAPS is considered shouting on the internet and can be difficult to read. Please try not to do that.

If the GMAPPROM.IMG file is not on the unit in the 'garmin' folder, then somehow it got deleted.

You need to contact Garmin Customer Support. They are the only ones who can help you at this point.

They may send you a disk with the file and instructions or they may have you return the unit for warranty service if it is under warranty.

Use the Quick-Start Wizard, and follow the prompts. Let Recuva scan the nuvi drive. After it finds all files, save them to a folder on the computer. After that, you'll need to look for the missing files ONLY. That is, the map files.

Then, come back here to get help on where to put the files. They have to go in the correct location.
