A Funny Thing Happened After The Last Map Update

A few weeks ago I remembered that I had the nuMaps Lifetime card that came with my 765T last year and hadn't used it yet so I updated the maps on my 765T for the first time. Last week we're leaving for a weeks vacation to the Eastern Shore of Va. I punched in the campground we were heading to. The 765T calculated to 99% and that's all she wrote. It wouldn't calculate the trip 100%. I tried turning it off then on. Once it only calculated to 77%. Luckily I was able to use my Droid for all my GPS needs.

Today we returned from our trip. I checked Garmin's website and found the update to 3.9 so I updated. I rebooted the GPS and pulled up the campground address under Recently Found. Again the GPS only calculated to 99%. I left it sitting there and after about a half an hour it finally finished calculating the route. I didn't give it that kind of time last week, I thought it was just stuck at 99%. I didn't think it was moving super slow.

Has anyone else experienced this issue before? I searched the forum but didn't find anything like it. Granted my searching skills leave a lot to be desired. If there isn't a fix for this I;ll just have to use my Droid as my GPS.

Avoidance

Check if there is any avoidance set in your unit. This could cause the unit longer to calculate your route.

Sneaky firmware update maybe?

When you updated the map, did you notice if your firmware was also being updated, like Garmin does sometimes without giving the opportunity to avoid it? That may explain a new problem popping up as many people have mentioned on other thread: new firmware = new problem.

Please confirm what firmware your unit has now and let's see if others report the same issue. I haven't seen it but I have a 770 so it's a different revision level from your unit anyway.

I also have exerienced similar symptoms.

But never as long as half hour. I also thought the unit has crashed and is stuck at 99%.

Try

a hard reset of your nuvi.

Weird after map update

That is strange.

Please report back to let us know if you ever got it to work correctly.

Yes

Also please report back if you didn't....all too often people come with these problems and we never hear the resolution, which would be helpful if it happens to someone else.

At the time of the map update I don't think the firmware was updated. Right now I have 3.90 which I believe it was updated to yesterday.

Hard Reset

I tried a reset like is described in the user manual, hold the slide far left for about 8 seconds. Still no change.

I've never seen or heard

I've never seen or heard that before. I do keep my unit updated as I check at least every 2 weeks and download any updates as they pop up.

Hope you end up getting it to work. I know the Tom Tom software for my iPhone works very good with the Turn by Turn directions and would use that as a backup if I ever had a problem with mine.

Hard Reset.

The hard reset procedure is given here by DorkusNimrod: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26136. The procedure you did does not do a complete reset of the nuvi.

My opinion on firmware is the opposite of jale. It is my policy to update the firmware first before updating the map, because certain features of the new map may be based on the latest firmware update.

Back up

Did you make a backup of your unit when you first got it? If so, re install the back up and see if you still have the problem.

Master Reset Procedure

I contacted Garmin customer support. They gave me the correct procedure for a Master Reset.

To perform a Master Reset on the nuvi 200, 205, 465, 500, 600, 700, 705, 1200,1300,1400 or 1600 series device:

Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings. If you would like to back up your favorites you can find instructions to do so by following the steps below.

1. Connect your original device to PC via USB cable
2. Open My Computer
3. Double click on the Garmin Nuvi drive
4. Double click on the Garmin Folder
5. Double click the GPX Folder
6. Right click on the Current.GPX file and click Copy
7. Go to your Desktop
8. Right click in any space followed by clicking Paste
9. Right click the file followed by clicking Rename
10. Rename the file to a name of your choice but ensure the file ends in .GPX. (Example Current1.GPX)
11. Disconnect your device from the PC
12. Connect the device you want to add the saved favorites on to a PC via USB cable (or leave it connected if you are adding them back to the same unit).
13. Right click the renamed file followed by clicking Copy
14. Open My Computer
15. Double click on the Garmin Nuvi drive
16. Double click on the Garmin Folder
17. Double click the GPX Folder
18. Click Edit
19. Click Paste

Master Reset Steps:
1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
4. Release the power button when the device powers ON
* You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
5. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
6. Touch Yes

The device will automatically reset. Follow the on screen prompts then place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

It is possible that a data corruption was causing the problem and this seems to have done the trick. I've been able to calculate routes to several different locations up and down the east coast without a problem. Thanks to all those who responded.
