Help with android phone

Hi, I'm new to this and am having trouble with my HTC Eris android phone. I've downloaded the files to my phone but need an ap to run it. Can anyone recommend an ap and run through the steps? Thanks.

~

There is no GPS/Map program for the Droid that I'm aware of that is capable of making use of the custom POI files available here.

Help With Android Phone

Try downloading in CSV format, and use a program like KMLCSV Converter (available on sourceforge) to convert the file to KML. Once you have it in KML format, you can save to Google Maps under My Maps, using your Google UserID. Then you can access the file using Layers feature in your Android phone.

Good luck!

Don't worry folks. I guarantee you that within a year or two Garmin will have a gps app for android phones. Either that or Garmin will be out of business. Because like it or not smartphones will replace standalone gps devices. TomTom knows it, they already made an app for the iphone and probably are working on an adroid app.

The news is that by the end of this year there will be android phones with 2GHz processors. Garmin simply can't compete with the rapid pace of improvements in smartphones.

Good things come to those that wait

Be patient.

Citation? I just bought a new Samsung Wave with the 1gHz A8 processor (same as the iPhone 4. Samsung makes it) and it's dang sweet and fast.

Where did you read that tidbit?

Google 2ghz phone and you will find lots of hits. Here's one story http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/198636/motorol...

I can not imagine the 2gig

I can not imagine the 2gig phone. I have the new Droid X that is 1 gig and that is fast. Technology is crazy today. So did anyone figure out how to use red light POI's on a Android phone?

This is just a tad off thread subject but still relevant.

In my searching for a new phone/carrier, I was informed about this site below. This has got to be one of the most helpful sites I have ever stumbled across. It's great for comparing just about anything and looking up a huge array of stats on new phone, old phone and future phones. Oh, did I forget to mention, its a totally free site also:)
It has new information posted every day and is very up to date.

cool
Yes there is a APP that will allow you to use such POI's like the one's found here but you must PAY for the service.

Per the rules of this Forum, which I will not break...
or reveal the name, but it will allow you to do all that you want or need for a fee between $9.99 - $99.

I Tried the $9.99 service for one month, (HINT) got what I needed and then canceled the Service.

AND YES! IT will work RIGHT, just as a GPS Will.

Garmin Android

I now have about a month of Android experience and I must admit that I do like the Android Operating System. I also like Garmin. In fact, that is probably why I like the Garminfone. But since there are various Android phones for the different carriers, I really think Garmin needs to roll out a Garmin Android application.

Also, I, too, like Phonescoop and I have also used this one http://pdadb.net/ in the past.

This community needs a Android application writer

Realistically, unless you have total mush for brains you don't need a GPSr to go across the town you live in, so these apps make good sense and your phone will give you locations of the Cameras with a google map view as you roll.

Jon if your reading this, you should definitely start writing a app that uses the info from this site that has already been collected.
It would bring in thousands of people for the data.
After all it don't take a rocket scientist to see the writing on the wall for the fate of the GPSr industry. I myself would have never thought it would have come this fast.

Jon if you don't have a Android phone I suggest you get one real fast and not miss the boat! If you do, then get writing! PhxxxxxAlext has one out that is awesome already, and we all know our data, that is community collected and checked is more accurate and desirable!

This is one of our plans for this year;)

Miss POI

Android guy?

BobDee. et all,

My grand daughters has have Android phones, (one at Stanford, one at ASU.) We pay for the first mentioned, but have yet to hold it in my own hand. I did hear her getting "Left at..." type instructions from her unit as I rode in the way-back seat. I'd try Google Maps on the Android. Just a hunch.

I have paid the $25 for a developer license, and begun downloading stuff that I do not understand. There is an Android emulator available from Google. Since Android is nominally based on open source, I predict that it will eventually take over the market.

Miss POI

I have a Droid and would be intrested to help out too Miss POI!

Right now, What I do is using the "Extra Poi edit" program and convert the csv or gpx file to a KML file. Then useing the pc I go to google map and load the kml file to "My maps" this way when I go to my phone, I will see the POI file there under the filter menu.

That is all to it... How ever, I would love a way to do all this right from the phone.

Google Maps Not Ready for Prime Time Yet

I have an android phone with Google Maps...I'm not giving up my GO930 yet. The interface leaves a lot to be desired, the TTS is worse than TomTom's, and the routing is not always the best.

On the plus side, it is nice to have traffic (that seems to be fairly accurrate), and a satelite view.

Android Has Better Traffic Coverage in DC

I travel I-66 into Washington, DC daily and the MSN Direct wireless coverage is terrible. I can travel for an hour on I-66 and never get any traffic info. I have to use my Android phone with traffic layer activated to get traffic info via the cellular data network.

I would really like to complain to MSN Direct, but they're shutting down the service in January of 2012. This is really frustrating!

Contact Garmin

Contact Garmin and suggest them making the Garmin mobile map apps for Android and other smart phone instead of making Garminfone. Maybe they will listen.

Their newest Gaminfone are freeking slow and frozen all the time.

You never know. Shoot,

You never know. Shoot, technology changes every day. What is here today is out the door and something better comes along tomorrow. Crazy

Google Android App Inventor

I also will be willing lend a helping in beta testing a APK for Droids. I just received my Google App Inventor invite the other day. Looking forward to see what this community can come up with using our database of files. After all there are already created and just waiting to be used in this remarkable smart phone OS.

Garmin is deaf on this one!

Typical, especially the frozen part. After all the consumers are Garmin's beta testers.

Instead of bringing out an app, they decided to get greedy and bring out a phone. And couldn't even do on their own and and after many missed delivery dates had to bring in Asus (Garmin-Asus alliance) to bail them out even though they tried , then they branded it to a single carrier to boot (T-Mobile).

An App would have put Garmin on most Android based smart phones and would again cornered the market, even with the on going firmware problems Garmin has had over the years since the Nuvi launch.

I have the feeling they have missed the boat on this one.

TomTom is at V1.5 now on the iPhone

Garmin is nowhere in sight on iPhone or Android.

TomTom for iPhone is fairly robust, and just added some new features, like 'navigate to a geotagged photo'. This might not make heavy sense to an auto GPS user but as easily and freely mobile users take and send each other pictures, I could see some handy uses for that.

Hi sdmeyerer97,
Have you tried Gpsvisulizer.com which had draw map and file conversion capabilities?
