2011.20 Likely Many Changes

Understand this release likely to come out late July early Aug. I have until approx Aug 12th per my 60 days.

How much typically gets updated on a quarterly new release. Understand poi likely get updated but how much map info gets updated a lot or just a little typically ? ? ?

Would love to just do the 2011.10 update (new unit has 2010.10) but will try and hold off for 2011.20. Have seen I should not even register yet as that could tie me to qualify only for 2011.10

Regards, Should I wait or hold off to gain more (2011.20)

NuMaps Guarantee date

It is impossible to know if any given map update will have significant changes in the areas you are interested in or travel in.

Your nuMaps guarantee date is tied to your first satellite acquisition, not to your registration date. So there is no reason to delay registering your nuvi.

There have been cases of a false acquisition date being sensed on the nuvi. In those cases, Garmin uses your sales receipt to verify purchase date and eligibility for the nuMaps guarantee.

Understand free upgrade is

Understand free upgrade is tied to 60 days of satellite acquisition.

Have heard if I register but hold off on the update I will be locked in to 2011.10 only. If I do not go through with the update but "register" now I will in essence be barred from the .20 and only entitled to the .10

All within the 60 day satellite acquisition window.

Regards.

Just wondering if the quarterly upgrades are typically just a pittance of updating and even worth waiting for the .20

map upgrade

you overthinking it! just register your nuvi and get your free map. 1 quarter isn't gonna change much at all and you run the risk of running your 60 days out. also, 60 days time period to update starts as soon as you turn your nuvi on and acquire signal!

tic tic !

On my 765T, my countdown started the first time I drove with it. I had used it home for three days before I took it on the road. Checking the value of "Ifix" in GarminDevice.xml showed it to be the day I took it on the road. Several other old threads have pointed out that first acquisition for Nuvi's is calculated from the time travel is first detected.

Have a trip coming up this

Have a trip coming up this summer and can travel as is with 2010.10 map set currently on my new nuvi.

Tempting on one hand to have the latest 2011.10 to travel with but tempting on the other hand to wait until after trip as I could hold off for 2011.20 map set that way.

Regards again.

Any major problems with the 2010.10 map set in general. P.S. I have upgraded the firmware but in limbo on maps.

The key

The key to the availability of a free update is when you first got a satellite lock on your device "while moving". From that point you have 60 days to obtain any available map update. You do need to register the device in order to download that update.

So if you've bought a new Nuvi, drove around the block to see how it works, then your 60 days starts from the day you took that trip.

You wouldn't be able to 'hold off' until after your trip to get the update unless you took the trip and were back within 60 days of the first time you took the GPS out for a spin and got a satellite lock.

Thanks, will be back before 60 day moving sat acquisition. I have until approx Aug 11 (have it marked on calendar, just not in front of me now).

If you know how to get at your GarminDevice.xml and know how to display it, look for the field labeled <Ifix> If you PM me the number in that field, I can tell you the exact date it will expire. My Ifix is 638113083 which translates to 2010-03-22 13:38:03UTC. The 60 day expiration was 2010-05-21 13:38:03UTC.
