Nüvi 2X5 Series & WebUpdater

I've recently noticed that after having downloaded the most recent updates for the voice files I use and then use WebUpdater a second time, it will still show the same updates for download.

I did some searching and realized that this "bug" has happened in the past with other nüvi series. A fix was suggested here http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=135628
but unfortunately I tried it and it didn't work.

I called Garmin and they acknowledged the problem and told me to try the following.
1- Delete my GUPDATE.GCD file and 2- Delete all the contents within the REMOTE SW file. I did the above and once again WebUpdater continues telling me that the voice files I previously downloaded are new updates.

The Garmin representative told me that there should be a fix for this in an upcoming firmware upgrade.

There doesn't seem to be much talk with other 2x5 users concerning the above so I'm wondering if this bug is actually affecting everyone using the 6.40 firmware ?

I would also like to know if someone can explain to me what exactly the REMOTE SW file is used for. I erased three "programs" within this file and wondering what they were used for rolleyes

I believe the REMOTE SW file resolves to the webupdater and communicator SW. I have had the same problem as you in the past, but it seems to have been fixed at this time.

Similar Problem with 765T

I had the same problem with my 765T. I checked my GarminDevice.xml and it showed version numbers of 0.0 for the voices that WebUpdater kept prompting me to update. Obviously it was failing to read in the version information for the installed voice files. I was able to solve the problem by going into the advanced diagnostics (press and hold the battery icon) and selecting "Start Test" in the "Version Information" screen followed by the "More" button. The test operation causes the Nuvi to read in all of the files stored in its memory and calculate checksums. In the process do that, it updates its version information for the various installed files. That in turn updates the GarminDevice.xml file and WebUpdater then sees correct version information so it stops prompting you to keep installing the same files over and over again.

Doesn't work on the 265wt.It shows correctly on diagnostic screen.When you run updater is still shows as a update.Only notice the voices to show back up after update.

Might be Something Else

At least then we know the 265WT is seeing the files. It definitely sounds like the GarminDevice.xml does not have the right information as that is what is checked by WebUpdater to determine if an update to specific component is required.

As a test, see if you can open your GarminDevice.xml in Internet Explorer. If so, search for the problem voices. Above their name will be the version information. This is an example from my older GarminDevice.xml when there were problems. This entry is okay:

<UpdateFile>
<PartNumber>006-D0525-00</PartNumber>
<Version>
<Major>1</Major>
<Minor>50</Minor>
</Version>
<Path>Garmin/Voice</Path>
<FileName>English_British_Daniel.vpm</FileName>
</UpdateFile>

You can see the major and minor versions. This is an example of a voice that kept prompting until I ran the checksums:

- <UpdateFile>
<PartNumber>006-D0529-00</PartNumber>
- <Version>
<Major>0</Major>
<Minor>0</Minor>
</Version>
<Path>Garmin/Voice</Path>
<FileName>Espanol_Americas_Javier.vpm</FileName>
</UpdateFile>

If, after checking checksums, you are seeing 0.0 for your version then something is truly off. If you are seeing version numbers for any of the problem voices, they are probably a version off now. Try running the update again followed by checksum and a review of GarminDevice.xml. It took about three tries for me to get the mess on my 765T cleaned up but now I show no updates available.

samkula: Glad to hear it worked!

Worked for me on 265

It worked for me. Got rid of all American and British English updates to 1.1. Then I saw an upgrade to Samantha 1.2. Downloaded it and ran it again and it went away.

Oops. I just checked again and they all came back to updater.

@jjen

Same results I got.Took me to upgrade 1.2 Samantha.Run webupdater and it shows.Changes from version 1.00 and 1.10 and 1.10 to 1.20 .The 1.20 didn't show up until after I done the test.Pretty sure that update was not there before I done the test.The poster who said it worked for 255 wonder if poster re-ran webupdater?

Contact Garmin Customer Support

Thanks Aardvark for that suggestion but unfortunately I got the same result as jjen & charlie.

Seeing that this "bug" has been a problem for some time now, I strongly suggest that we all take a few minutes and notify Garmin at http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/support/supportcont...

in hope that it'll get resolved with the next firmware update.

Thought

It seems that if you run the test and then connect to the computer without powering the unit off the old updates won't appear in updater. If you power the unit off then connect to the computer again they will reappear in updater.

@jjen

Got the same results by not powering down.Before the test got to Samantha voice I noted last column as unknown.Then changed to DAA45200 once the test got to it.Sure that means something important about the problem.

.

If you follow the link posted by canuck and read the thread at the link, you'll find that in the post from me (SergZak), I mention that GarminDevice.xml is what WebUpdater looks at when polling for new firmware, voice and other updatable components. The improper generation and updating/repopulating of the xml file is the root of the issue. Other nuvis have had this issue in the past and others will likely have it in the future. We went through this on both the nuvi 7x0 series and the 7x5 series. Garmin seems to work off of known buggy firmware code base and it seems silly that this issue keeps reappearing again and again, on old units and new units. The best thing to do is to contact them if you have the issue and let them debug the code and provide proper working firmware for your unit.

This "let the end user jump through hoops to try to fix the issue" thing is really getting ridiculous... rolleyes

Firmware

I read that thread and remember seeing it before for the 7x5 models.I emailed Garmin about the problem.Pretty sure that was not my first email on it.Have found it takes complaints from other users as well to get action.It is nice to document to other users on the forum about problems but unless members call or email in numbers the problem is not going to get any priority action.

What does that have to do with updater not seeing that the voices are updated?

Update

You thank that is a bad answer.Look at this one I just got back.My reply was to have a supervisor contact me.Have no idea what he is talking about 2.3 .Latest update for Samantha is 1.20

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. If the webupdater keeps saying there is an update for the voice then it is not loading. The newest version that I saw for the voices was 2.3, but that was a different serial number range than your so it may be different. If your voices are working okay then I would just continue to use like normal. If you have any other questions please feel free to reply to this email. Thank you.

Hummmmm interesting Charlie

Thanks for that latest update, at least we see that we're getting through to them. I emailed & then called once last week and they never asked me about my audio SW version.

We are making progress, now let's just hope for a fix before 2011 razz

Here is email I just got from Garmin.

This is an issue that has been passed on the engineers however a fix will not be instant and unfortunately I nor a supervisor can give you a date regarding a fix. We are technical support and when all trouble shooting has been exhausted it is passed along for the engineers review.

Should you have further questions please contact Garmin Product Support by replying to this email or contact our Consumer Support Line at 800-800-1020 Monday-Friday 8am-5pm CST.
