All Work - no play

Since i'm retired anyway I figure I'll do even less work and head our on our annual driving trip this coming Saturday. Will be a little short this year - only driving about 4500 miles. All the latest Custom POI's I use are loaded up and raring to go. First stop is Dollywood in Pidgeon Forge.

I hope everyone has a GREAT week !

Best Ribs

I smoked three racks of ribs yesterday, and if I do say so myself, they were the best that I have ever smoked.

[Just wanted to tie this to your post, so I quoted.]

And so appropriate for the Memorial Day observance. I have researched the history of the Eighth Air Force and specifically B-17s for many years. Not only is it arguably the most beautiful airplane ever designed (it's got to be the graceful dorsal fin), but it may also be the most significant airplane ever designed.

While the B-17s did need fighter coverage help in spite of their nickname as the "Flying Fortress", any design less than this would not have given the Allies enough guts to even try daylight bombing, especially when the British were only willing to do night time bombing because it was less costly in lives and planes.

Just a few years ago I was fortunate enough to take a 30-minute ride in one of the few remaining flyable B-17s, the Aluminum Overcast of the EAA. While I enjoyed this dream of a lifetime, I couldn't help but feel guilty over this "joyride" knowing that over 40,000 brave, young men never returned from their missions in similar B-17s. I knew I was coming back--they didn't and yet they still went up.

I know this is the proverbial "day late and a dollar short," but my deepest gratitude to all our servicemen and women who have served, are serving, and will serve.
