Newbie help creating custom POIs

Ahead of time, thanks for everyone's help. I have spent the past two days reading through all the posts and still have not been able to get my question answered. I understand how to create a custom POI, add wav file for sound and add an icon and load it on my device. I understand all that. I have a Nuvi 265T which I got a month ago, so I am still pretty new with using it.

Let me tell you what I am looking to do, and maybe you can help me determine a) if it is possible, and b) how best to do it.

We are getting ready to take a trip next weekend (June 4-7) and I would like to setup some custom POIs of interesting places to visit, sites to see, etc along the route. Whether we choose to stop and visit them is not the point, but I would like to be alerted that they are nearby so we have the option of stopping if we want.

Here is a scenario: we are driving down the highway and there is an intersting historical site coming up in the next town 10 miles away. To get there, we would have to exit the road we are on and go to that location. I would like to setup a custom POI to play when we are say, 5 miles from the location, which would give us plenty of time to decide if we want to stop and also time to prepare to exit the road we are on.
Now for the questions/problem: I want that alert to just play once, with a pop up notification, and then I want it to go away. No banner sitting on the screen for the next 10 miles (5 miles each way from the proximity marker) like it does now. Also, ideally, when that pop up notification comes up, I would like to be able to press it and be able to choose whether to GO to that (thus changing my route via a new waypoint) or clear the pop up.

That is the main question. I realize in order to do this the way I want (to play a custom message dependent on the interesting site) I will need to create a number of TourGuide files for each particular site we might want to visit and load them all separately. But, every time I load a new POI file it will overwrite the previous one. How do I add, say 20 custom POIs with their own individual recording, without overwriting the previous ones?

I don't know about Garmin....

...but on my TOMTOM, you can tell it to warn you if a POI is on your route... then choose what POI list you want to be warned about. You can also plan a whole trip on the screen, allowing you to hit POIs that are near your route.

Garmin must have something similar.

Regarding File Loading

First, you can load multiple files by accessing the poi.gpi file between loads and renaming each iteration, (always ending in .gpi) Then they won't be overwritten.

Two, you can keep your multiple files in a single folder on your PC and let POI Loader load them all. Each Tourguide file can be set independently with different distances in "manual" load mode. If you put them in (up to 32) subfolders, you even get category names/subfiles on the GPS. Then if you want to add a file, you can reload the whole lot of them. (Keep track of your multiple proximity distances if you are using different distances for different places.)

Is there a reason not to combine all the points in a single file? (or several by category?) If the proximity alert distance is always the same, then there is no real reason to separate them lest you want them in categories for screen browsing as I note above.

In Addition

You can mix in non-TourGuide files for other types of locations you may only need as you travel, looking for restaurants "when" you are hungry, specific gas stations when you need gas, etc.

You can also load files for "along the route" proximity alerts.

POI Loader supports all of these. You'll probably find lots of files here at the factory you may wish to have loaded along with your own.

Instructions for all these techniques are within these fora.

N.B. My edit of the previous response is blocked. Be sure to properly spell/capitalize TourGuide

I Don't Know...

I don't know exactly, all of the proper menu settings to enable the alert features you ask for.

But once you load custom poi files, you will find a "new" menu item for proximity settings. One for route settings, (including speed and redlight cams,) and one for TourGuide alerts.

Nor am I sure about the "Go" function you ask for.

OK. thanks for the

OK. thanks for the responses. That answers the question on how to setup the alerts.

Now, how do I remove the alert once it pops up? If all I can set it for is distance or speed (not sure how that would apply?)...how can I remove the pop up alert banner once I acknowledge seeing it?

I don't want to have to keep looking at that banner (and worse, having it in the way blocking out road names on the map), for the entire distance setting.

thanks for the links, I have read them already and they helped me figure out how to set the alerts.

But, that does not answer my primary question:

how do I get the pop up alert OFF my screen?

I have a Nuvi 265T, I do not get alert banners across the top, they pop up right in the middle of my screen and my map, covering up things I need to be able to read.

I think you are stuck with the banner.

On my 855, when tourguide banner shows on map, I can select it. This opens detail screen that shows sound button, picture thumbnail button (if you have one), and has GO.

I don't think that this works on the 2x5 series (no mp3 player).

You can attach sound, picture, icon to individual pois using Mapsource and maybe poi editor.

Hope this helps.

Good luck with that!

Unfortunately, in my experience, i yhink they will stay on screen as long as the alert is triggered.

I tried doing what you are trying to do last year on my Nuvi 255 and was totally unsatisfied with the results and just gave up. I do wish you luck -- smile

What you want to do use a gpx file to get the different settings you want for the 20 different pois.Extra Poi Editor will fit your needs http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor .You are not able select a pop up notification that comes up and select Go.You will need to go back to your custom poi list on the gps.I put suggestion in about a month ago to Garmin to be able to do just what you want.It was supposed to be passed on for consideration.
