Where (Specifically) Should One Mark a Location?

I was in the parking lot of a park in my area last week, and decided to save it as a favorite in my c330. The next day, when I tried to have the GPS navigate me there, it got as far as taking me down a dead end before saying "arriving at destination". The parking lot where I had marked the location was across a field from the end of the dead end.

Obviously, this wasn't the proper way to navigate me to back to the parking lot.

When I found my way back to the parking lot, I re-marked my position BEFORE I entered the parking lot, when I was still on a thru street. This worked fine when I navigated back there later.

This got me thinking. If a location (or a POI) is not on a thru street (e.g. a Starbucks in a strip mall), should you mark it at the literal spot where the front door is, or before one turns into the parking lot?

Should the POI coordinates also follow this rule?

Where to Mark a Location

I live on a large property. If I set my house, which is about 1/4 mile from the entrance to the property as my Home Location, any route to it takes me to a road at the back of the property which, although closer to my house has no acess to the property. I have to set my Home Location at the entrance to the property on the public road.

Marking your spot

I have marked them both ways. By street entrance usually works the best for me, but not always. If the store is on a corner and has an entrance from 2 streets, the GPS will sometimes have me drive by and do a u-turn to get back to that entrance. In those cases, I try to pick a spot between the two entrances and hope it will direct me to the side street. Sometimes it works.

I plan to live forever. So far, so good.

I have POIs that do not

I have POIs that do not alert because they aren't on the street. If I move them (in the file) so that they are located on or VERY near the street, they work. Therefore, I must say that it would be good practice to put it on the street.
