Getting to a destination automatically go back to Map mode, and out of Go to destination mode?

It's always been that way for me. I get to my destination, and I'm back to the map.

My NUVI 350 does the same. Once it reaches the destination, the program has nowhere else to go.

I don't think the unit was ever out of "map mode." It just reached the end of the route so it had no more magenta line to paint. Most people would plan on either turning their unit off or putting it in storage mode because they had gone as far as they wanted.
Think of the checkered flag as more of a different color via point flag. What happens when you reach a via point? You stay on the route and the flag disappears.

And if...
...you have a cradled unit ala the 765, undocking it sets a 'where is my car' so you can navi your way back to it from where ever you ended your pedestrian meanderings.
