I don't have one but if I were to guess it would be changing the locale information such as from MPH to kPH. Either that or it is based on the country you select when you first start the device. In that case, if you chose Canada, then everything would be displayed in metric.

thanks for the info

I'll have do the update as soon as i get home.

1690 update

It is mind blowing to see a brand new unit being released to the market with so many "bugs".

Geez.... a list of 30 "fixes" for one unit...

That's not a "bug" or two.... that's an Infestation !

I'd be really careful about

I'd be really careful about getting the update. I updated on Tuesday... it worked all day Tuesday, but on Wednesday my GPS decided to stop working. Only the base map is still being read. The rest of the maps are there, as evidenced by the fact that my gps drive shows as full when plugged into my computer, but the gps can't read them for whatever reason. I've tried reinstalling the maps, but garmin map update just says that the GPS is full and can't upload anything. I sent a message to garmin support, and am still waiting for a response back. If I go to system -> map -> info the page is blank. I'm pretty frustrated right now.

1690

My GPS after update is fine and all is correct.

I have to wonder who they are using to develop their code. Either they have dumped their experienced programming staff for cheaper inexperienced staff or they have been OD'ing on the medical marijuana. I am stunned at the number of bugs across the various product lines. My own 765T with v3.90 is terribly flaky and I am building a nice collection of crash reports.

I also found a minor cosmetic bug in MapSource 6.16.1 that I just reported. It does not effect the usage but it is a Windows Programming 101 type mistake. (To see the bug for yourself, put an & in the name of a waypoint and notice the & is replaced with an underscore on the map. The character following the & is interpreted as a Windows accelerator key - several POI's on this site use & in the waypoint names)

Units from years back like the eMap, GPS V, etc that I owned had nowhere near the amount of bugs and flakiness that plague today's units. Those units from the past were solid & dependable. I think it's all about getting new units out the door without fully testing (leaving the testing to the end-user). When the bugs show up, they work on correcting those but by that time, they are already working on the next new product that has it's own share of issues. Sadly, I don't see it getting any better.

Just look at the length of time they are taking to fix (if they even are) the 7x5 series' buggy v3.90 firmware. Five months and counting...
