Do the POIs get updated each time you update a map on a Garmin unit? I have never done this before, but I am considering it. Thanks in advance for your replies.

NO
The POI's have nothing to do with garmin map updates though some of the businesses/places that show up within the garmin lookups (not POI) are likely updated with the map update.
POI's are almost always going to be more current than something on your garmin assuming the poi is updated regularly
New POI
There should be an update to the stock POI that garmin has when they do a map update. I have noticed more new POI when I did my map update.
New POIs
The built-in POIs do get "updated" when you install the latest map set but they are still light years behind the Custom POIs that you get from POI Factory, in most cases.
And typically, the custom POIs are more accurate.
