Garmin Nuvi 885t map update

FYI: For those users who own a nuvi 885t, i just got
off the phone with Garmin Support and now it seems
the map update 2011.10 will be available by May 13,2010.
I guess its a 50/50 chance.

Have You Tested The Voice Recognition Since Then

Earlier in this thread (May 7, 2010) I mentioned that I also upgraded the map on my 855, and that it broke the voice recognition feature.

The Garmin support tech says that this was a known problem, and they were expecting a fix in the next couple of weeks. Another member here, also upgraded his 855, but did not have any problem with the VR.

Could you please test that VR is still working after your upgrade. For your information all basic commands like "View Map", "Trip Computer", etc. still work, but the unit will not accept any City or Street names.

Not that we should be surprised but...

It's not like we should be surprised. Garmin writes today (May 20, 2010):

Unfortunately the process has been delayed. I recommend you continue to check your account, until you receive the new map update notice on the home page. Thank you for your patience.

At least they're being honest now by not offering a date.

F*** Garmin Tech Support. Yes, speech rec is broken on both my 855 now (City, street names, units not working)! This seems to be the reason for the delay! If support mentioned this problem is confirmed, I wouldn't have upgraded. Idiots!

My reply from Garmin

when asked about the CN 2011.1 availability for 8xx units:

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be more than happy to help you with this. Our IT team is currently working on this and we hope to have the update available by the end of the month."

It was my 3rd communication with them this month.
The first time they said 5/13, the second time it was 5/19.

Hopefully Garmin will

Hopefully Garmin will release the update tomorrow, I read someplace.. I will be waiting patiently.

Salt in the wound

I hope you're right as I'm anxiously waiting to update my 855 as well.

But then, to rub salt in my wound, I got an email ad from Garmin today. Its subject is:

Get New Maps for your Garmin

Grrrr. I was hoping the email was notice to check mygarmin for the 855 update.

I wonder who'll be first tomorrow to post on the 8xx map update...

That's very, very

That's very, very optomistic. My guess is that it will be another delay.

It's here! 2011.10 for the nuvi 8xx (at least for the 855...)

As predicted by Garmin (ignoring the other predictions that were wildly optimistic), my nuvi 855 now shows a lifetime numaps update available for my unit.

I'm off to download and install.

I'll report back when it's done.

A quick update

I'm downloading the new map on another computer and thought I'd fill you in.

As someone else reported, Garmin has an entirely new installation process for this map. You start by downloading a 3MB updater, then run that. No more Download Manager as in the past.

As the Updater starts, you're offered standard or advanced installation. I chose advanced and see that the default update setting for my nuvi 855 is to: 1) install all of North America and 2) to install to my GPS only. So I imagine that if you don't go with the Advanced option, your GPS will be updated but your computer and Mapsource will NOT. If true, and if you want the new map on your computer, go for Advanced and change the default to "install to GPS and computer."

Interesting. By choosing to install to my GPS and computer, I'm warned that the download will take longer.

Since my download process has just started, I may be wrong in this--but it appears that we no longer will have the executable 2GB file downloaded which can be saved on hard disk or to DVD-R for a future installation. If true, and if you have multiple Garmins under lifetime maps, it definitely appears that a download will be required for each unit--none of this "download once, then use the 2GB file to update all lifetimed nuvis you own." Updating multiple units will take longer from now on.

One nice thing about this new updater is that if you have maps to be used by Mapsource in a custom location (think d:\garmin, for instance), the updater will correctly find your old maps and offer to install this new map to the same location.

As before, I'll report back after my 855 installation of the update is complete.

Thank you all for all the

Thank you all for all the info here, as it really helps in trying to keep up with everything. smile

In Speech Recognition still broken?

Did they fix the problem with speech rec not working after the update? Try street names & keyboard entry with voice.

No update for me.

It is interesting. I am one of the few users (855 with Lifetime maps) that was able to update to 2011.10 when the map was first posted on April 21. On myGarmin.com, my 2011.10 download expired on May 5, so I am not being offered this newest update. I guess I will need to wait for 2011.20.

Will this test your problem?

I tried two speech recog routes today and both worked. Is the first an example of what will fail for you? If not, tell me what to try.

With my 855 and speech prompts on, I spoke the following (with a real street name given) and all worked. Upon asking if the address I chose is correct and I answered "Yes," it took me there:

Where To?
Address
Flagstaff
Four hundred
"street name"
Yes

I also did a "Go Home" and it worked for me.

Map Update for Nuvi 885 T

FYI: I logged into my garmin dashboard and noticed
The update Is Finally Here- 2011.10
Well here goes nothing.
After a month of waiting and a phone call to garmin,
I downloaded , updated and installed the map 2010.11 to my unit. grin

UPDATED GPS 855

I updated my gps 855 today with the new map. Everything went well. No regrets for me. Took about 1.5 hours. I saved my mapsource to the computer and then ran the updated map.

It Fixed My Voice Recognition Problem

As I reported earlier, when I downloaded the map on May 7, it broke the voice recognition features of my 885T.

I had to call Garmin support today, to add the download button to My Maps page, since the download ability was removed two weeks after the original download ( or May 21 ).

The download took about 2.75 hours, and the install took another 10-15 minutes.

I am happy to report that the voice recognition is once again working properly.

Speech Recognition Working Again

Installed the new 855 map on my units. Speech rec is working again. However, I don't like how the new Garmin updater works. I have multiple same units and it had to re-download the 2GB map every time.

Updated my 855 tonight, all looks good

Updated my 855 tonight, all looks good for functionality. Took about 40 minutes from start to end and this update seems to have fixed my problem on searching for local Costco stores ... nice!

Garmin also honored the update even though I was past my one time update date due to their delay.

maps for 8xx

I guess I was a little late on the updated maps. I checked last weekend just prior to our trip to Branson, MO and found no updates.

Sounds like based on the prior messages, they have fixed the voice problems with the map update.

Has anyone else had issues with the map update this week?

Update still stalls unless firewall disabled

I updated my 855.

The advice to "just wait, it will appear that nothing is happening for a long time" could hurt people running certain firewalls. Until I disabled COMODO, I did not even get to the screen display or one's code. (and, as with the previous version, I got no popup from COMODO asking whether I wanted to grant permission--which I see from dozens of other programs. Garmin has done something a bit odd here).

In this version, not only does the Garmin Map Update window display progress bars with about 35 units of resolution during the download to PC phase and also the download to unit phase, but if you mouse over a non-text portion of the bar you'll get a tooltip popup with progress in one percent increments, and also an instantaneous transfer rate. I like this, and don't remember it. Is it new?

On my system it was about 55 minutes to download from Garmin, a couple of minutes in "Preparing Maps" and twenty minutes of actually writing data to the Nuvi.

And, yes, streets and POIs were displayed for a couple of towns in Mexico I checked. Not, however, Belize.

Speech recog broken

Has anyone heard anymore on this?

Just received my nuvi 855 last night (5/27/2010). Went for a drive and was really impressed with the voice recognition feature. Got home checked for firmware and map updates and installed them. Now no Address entry with speech just like others have said here.

Try Rebooting

andematt wrote:

My speech recognition began working immediately after the map update, but I noticed this morning that it was not working properly. It wasn't quite the same problem I had before, but it still wasnt working properly.

I rebooted the unit and voice recognition was back to normal.

I don't know if it's related, but I like to play solitaire in the easy mode because I can win 9+ times out of ten. I must have played over 20 games last night and I didn't win a single game until I rebooted.

VR not working on address

Rick,

I've rebooted since.

What map version do you have (Tools -> settings -> Map -> "Map Info")? Mine is: CN North America NT 2011.10 [1] Lower 49 States.
I tried reverting the firmware to 4.6 but that didn't help. It has to be the new map or that I somehow got the wrong version of the map for the 855.
Matt

Interesting

Interesting. Why would your 855 not update to the full North America and go with just 49 states? No 50th, no Canada, no Mexico? 855s can handle it all unless you have oodles of extra stuff loaded into your 855's onboard memory. Or when updating to 2011.10, did you purposely select 49 states?

My map is "CN North America NT 2011.10", no mention of anything else (ie lower 49) . I have firmware 4.70 and GPS SW Version 2.90m.

Do you have more than one map installed?. I have the 885T, but I think the maps are identical. The only time I have seen things like "Lower 49" mentioned was when installing using the old method from the Mapsource DVD and an unlock code.

Thanks Rick. No just one map but the fact that you don't have the lower 49 means I must have checked a box I shouldn't have. Tried updating the map again but it stayed "lower 49". Wonder how I can wipe the map and copy it over fresh. Seems like it's not getting wiped out as part of the map install process.

Just to check

Just to check, andematt, could you connect your 855 to your computer, log in to mygarmin and go to mydashboard, then check your 855's free space. Even with many custom POIs loaded into the nuvi's memory, my 855 shows 1180.4 MB free. If yours is very much less, it could be a memory issue limiting you to the US Lower 49.

Also, when running the map update, the upper left hand corner of one of the early Updater pages has two windows where you can select what to install. As I remember, the upper of them given me a choice of North America, Lower 49, etc. Do you have this window? Can you select North America (which I believe was my uppermost choice of a good half-dozen or so choices)?
