Numaps

I wonder if this is a good deal. Is there any real benefit from getting the lifetime maps?

Do a search

Do a search on the forums here and you'll get a very wide array of thoughts. I am of the "lifetime maps are the cat's meow" thought.

Just a year ago, a refurbished 755T cost me more than that.

its not really lifetime

its not really lifetime maps. you cant download them if your unit dies. if they allowed you to move the license between units THAT would be lifetime maps.
or even if they allowed you to download without having your GPS connected.

GPS Models : 60CSX w/2GB Kingston (stolen), 32GB Samsung INNOV8 with Garmin Mobile XT(8GB), NUVI 760 w/16GB PSF16GSDHC6 (DIED in 30 days), V (died), Nokia N8 with Garmin Mobile XT(48GB), Blackberry Torch with Google Maps.

Lifetime maps

Now that would be nice to transfer over to another unit.Don't believe that will happen though. It seems like units are starting to be sold with the lifetime maps being included. So we may not have to worry about it in the future if the trends continues

My Feeling Exactly

That is my feeling. The purchase should be transferable with the unit if you sell it. Also, it should be transferable to another device without the option to go back to the device that had it (to prevent "every other update" type behavior). Even if they charged say a $10-$20 administrative fee to do the swap it would still be a bargain.
