2011.10 and 7x5 Series

Just updated my 765T to 2011.10. Update process went smoothly but after disconnecting and restarting the unit, it gave me an error - "Cannot unlock Maps".

Called Garmin, and their tech support says they are aware of the issue with the new map (2011.10) and 7x5 and some zumo units. For some reason the 3D maps (or buildings) doesn't get unlocked and they will have a fix available soon.

Anyone else on the same boat?

I have the same problem with my 765T . When will the fix be out?

Not Yet

I have a 765T and I was going to apply my free update tomorrow but I guess I will wait now. I have until May 21st to claim it according to the Garmin Dashboard.

Why?

I have not had much success with garmin help techs, I will wait till they have a fix for the current problem. I plan to use the 765T as a backup for my 760. I'm not in a hurry to use it but I was going to do the update, now I will wait

.

While I understand that, the clock is ticking on the warranty, and I would still try to download the map. You just never know, right? Nothing ventured, nothing gained... wink

Very good points, The warranty is one year. I will turn it on soon.

Just remember, you have to drive with it, not just turn it on for the map update clock to start. Just a thought, friend!

no issues...

No issues at all with my 765. I updated yesterday however...maybe all the download traffic is causing issues. I'm sure Garmin's servers are not too happy at this point in time.

The unit needs to be moved with a satellite lock obtained...how far and at what speed is unknown except by Garmin.

1. "First use" is defined as the GPS being used for at least 30 seconds at 20 km/h, to ensure that demos in shops don't trigger it accidentally. I pointed out that high sensitivity chipsets can "jump around" in environments with poor GPS reception but they don't think that will be an issue. That data is stored in the memory of the GPS and will be retrieved when the GPS is registered on mygarmin.

I'll post it here for others as well.

Nice find Juggernaut...

Nice find Juggernaut...I remember that topic from way back which you linked to. It's the closest I've seen to any valid info on the speed/distance/time involved in what constitutes a "first use" scenario aside from being direct from Garmin's mouth.

Thank you Juggernaut, I will turn it on soon to make sure everything works. I will be in Arkansas next month for a week, I plan on using it during that trip to break it in.

.

Just a tip (I'm sure others will agree), update the map but not the firmware. Stay at 3.6 or your current FW.

785T OK

Just installed on my 785T, no problems!

the map update forces firmware update. I know there are ways around it but for average users there's no way to keep the 3.6 with 2011.10

First hand experience: I received a replacement Nuvi 765T on Friday, March 20, 2010. I played with it at home but did not take it anywhere. On Monday, March 22, 2010 I drove to work with it. The ifix, stored in GarminDevice.xml, shows the first fix to be March 22, 2010 at 13:38UTC. That was the first trip I took with it.

I never knew that, thanks. I've been wondering for years now why my 200W registration started 3 months before I bought it! Had my 765T by the time I discovered it and never pressed the issue with Garmin.

spectrum44 - Something else to think about. Maybe your clock is already ticking like mine was! Don't loose the purchase receipt!!

Just missed it.

I just got my free map 2010,40 recently. If I know that the 2011.10 was coming out, I would have waited. I can't believe I missed out on the newer version.

Contacted Garmin

The free update for my 765T is available until May 21, 2010. I contacted Garmin support about the issue with locked 3D maps and basically I have no choice but to upgrade to the defective maps before the expiration or lose my free update altogether. So if an update were to appear on May 22, 2010, I gather I would be stuck with the broken 3D maps unless they provide a mechanism to install the patch after the fact.

I have this sneaking suspicion that this will be the last Garmin I ever own. Other vendors are looking better and better. Even had a strange hiccup with the Bluetooth this morning that never happens with my C550.

FIX IS HERE!!!

Garmin sent an email containing a link to the fix for this issue. The 3D Building file needs to be updated. Here is the link:

https://buy.garmin.com/support/productSupport/kanaCase.faces...

It looks like Garmin has corrected the issue in the actual map download which explains why a few here reported no problems. If you ARE having issues, this will fix it - since it fixed mine.

What about a fix for the 765 traffic problem?

It is encouraging to see Garmin respond to the map update problem with the 7X5 series. However, they have been aware of and supposedly working on a fix for the traffic reception problem on the 765 with 3.90 installed and still no results.

Map update fix

Does the below Garmin quote mean that after 4/23, the map update will be problem free, or will their fix still need to be applied?

"If you downloaded a free mapping update to your nuvi 7x5 or zumo 660/665 between Wednesday, 4/21 and Friday 4/23, you may see a message saying "Can't unlock maps" or "Cannot authenticate maps" when you turn your device on. This is due to an error in the 3D Building file and can be easily corrected."

It looked like they fixed

It looked like they fixed the issue. I think they tried to act too fast to stop people from getting the free Mexico map and screwed things up.

Keep this in mind, your units warranty starts the day you made your purchase. The first acquired date and registration date (used for map updates only) have nothing to do with the units 1 year warranty. The below, is an answer from a Garmin FAQ from their web pages.

Question: When does my one year Garmin warranty start?
Answer:

A one year manufacturer's warranty is included at no extra cost when you purchase a Garmin GPS device from an authorized Garmin retailer. The one year manufacturer's warranty begins on your purchase date1. You will need to register your unit so information is on file in case service is needed. Keep in mind, the one year warranty starts on the purchase date posted on the receipt and not the date the device was registered.

1A proof of purchase or sales receipt may be needed to verify warranty if service is required.

Check this thread (skip to the last posts if you don't want to wade through it all):

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/28761

Sadly, other than two users here who somehow have succesfully downloaded the new 2011.10 map to their 8xx series nuvi, the official position of Garmin is that the most current map is 2010.40 and that 2011.10 is due out for us in early May. I can confirm that when I log into mygarmin or mydashboard, the new 2011.10 map is not listed as available for my nuvi 855 even thought I have it installed on my nuvi 750.

Downloaded to 360 and 765t with no problems

I did not see the problems others have talked about with the latest update I downloaded yesterday and I do have Mexico on my 765t so I won't be downloading the newer update unless I have to. I'm sure they'll delete Mexico out on the next update in 3 months though

.

Frside007 wrote:

I've backed up 2011.10, I hope you did so too.

However, you never know what they'll do. Maybe this is an 'offering' to keep people from churning to another vendor.

Mexico is now included...

I doubt they'll remove Mexico as it's now included...

If you look at the City Navigator product page, it clearly states "New extended coverage, including new coverage for Mexico".

Me too...

Me too! I recently updated to 2010.40 and I'm assuming now it won't update to 2011.10. However, since I will probably return my new 765T to Costco for a full refund (will still have lifetime traffic & maps), I will use the lifetime maps for my 780 instead, and still get the new update on that.

Are you sure Garmin doesn't allow you to take advantage of any and all map updates within the period of first using your new nuvi? Is it limited to just one if you're within the time frame?

UPDATE - I just answered my own question. On their site, Garmin says:

The nuMaps Guarantee1 program allows customers who have purchased a new* nuvi or a new zumo device to update the map in the unit free of charge if:

The unit is registered at http://my.garmin.com within 60 days from the unit's first use (this is based on the first time the unit has acquired satellites)
A newer map than the preloaded map in the unit is available, or a newer map is released within 60 days from the unit's first satellite acquisition. (See notes for exclusions or limitations.)
Notes:

Limit one free map update per eligible nuvi or eligible zumo
This offer is non-transferable
Customer will not qualify for the free map update if the unit is registered with Garmin by telephone or more than 60 days from the unit's first satellite acquisition
The nuMaps Guarantee is only applicable to preloaded maps for North America and Europe
