Harvesting POIs

Hi All.

I had this perception that as I travel, I can capture points of interest as I go. It's a nice feature, press the "Where Am I" icon and boom, there you have it. Latitude and Longitude, a nearby address, nearest cross streets.

Moreover, I can save the spot, and name it as I wish, in My Favorites.

So here's my question.

How do I harvest that information?

My Nuvi (765T) has no obvious (to me) way to select that place to display all that lovely information. Yes, I can choose it as a destination or waypoint, but other than the name... nope, can't seem to find the magic "open sesame".

1) Is there a way to display the data I want for creating the POI?

2a) If I have hundreds of entries and want to capture it all, what file do I upload from the Nuvi to my PC?

2b) How do I convert it to something I can read, copy, and paste, into a csv file?

3) While I'm at it... is there a tool to convert "lats and longs" from the format stored in the gps to our POI's DDD.DDDDD format?

EPE

If you use Extra POI editor, you can open your faves and save as a .gpx, or .csv etc.. You can change the GPS handling to dec, degrees in the unit itself.

No Need To Convert

I'm not sure which model you have, but on my 660, I've changed the format in the settings.

Where To?-->scroll down to Coordinates-->Format

select h ddd.ddddd° and press OK. After that, no conversion necessary.

The hard part will be

The hard part will be sorting and categorizing the POI's in to usable files of some sort, so it's not just a mismatch of collected data on the road. Unless of course it's just for your use then it doesn't matter.

I'm not sure of Ozme52's 765, but I can create categories on my unit from Favorites.

You've got some 'splaining to do!!

Open my faves? Do you mean with the unit in storage mode? I thought to do this already but it wasn't obvious "where" my faves were located. Which file are they in? Will it be obvious if I open the Garmin via EPE?

Edit: I removed my follow-up question about formatting lat-long which was already answered. thanx

D'Oh... why is that in "Where To" and not one of the system options.

No need to answer. It was a rhetorical question.

In addition to categorizing them as Juggarnauts follow on suggests, if you do have a large uncategorized list, you can open a csv file in excel and sort by one or more of the columns.

So if you have rhyme and reason to your naming conventions, you could sort them easily enough, save several versions of the file, and thereafter eliminate entries that are not "of a category".

So available programatically... and thanx.

I just downloaded EPE and will give it a try.

You'll love as we all do. Remember to save it as a .gpx, or csv. You can then import it to a card, or the unit as desired. I prefer my SD card.

I look

I look forward to see your collection. I guess you can extract and add them to other poi files..

Very good!
