City Explorer maps

I am wondering about the usefullness of the Paris City Explorer map.

I just acquired a nuvi 1490 as an upgrade from my nuvi 750. One apparently useful element of the 1490 is its ability to take advantage of public transportation for routing, whereas most other units do not have that capability.

We will soon be visiting France, principally for a bicycling tour, however we have scheduled a few extra days before and after the bicycling to visit Paris on foot. We have reservations for the before and after at a CDG hotel and will be reliant on public transportation for that portion of the trip.

Initially I planned to make do with only my 76csx, which is perfect for use on a bicycle. But, it doesn't have the capability to take advantage of public transportation when using City Explorer maps.

From what I've read, City Explorer maps are useful in some locales, but not in others. If City Explorer Paris is one of the good ones, I'd take the 1490 along. Otherwise I'd leave it home because it would be just another thing to deal with on a trip.

Incidentally, I do have CN Europe, so I'm covered except for public transportation. At 15 bucks, the Paris map is cheap; the principal issue is whether or not to bring along an extra GPS.

A tough decision...

however, it might just be worth it, and take the risk! I always take mine along, just in case. You would hate to get there and find that you should have brought it along. I have the same concerns with "Rome" where we will be in August this year. A tough choice but I'll bring mine...just in case, have a great time!

CityXplorer maps

I own a Nuvi 775T and a 1260T and will be going to UK and Ireland next month (unless of course Icelandic volcanoes scuttle that - scary thought...). I plan on bringing both. The Nuvi 775 with Europe CNNT maps will be used for driving. (I hope 2011 update will be available in the next week or so.) I plan to use the 1260T for walking in Dublin and will buy the CityXplorer map (the first one for me). The 1260T is smaller and easier to walk around with than the 775T, and the CityXplorer maps have enhanced navigation on the 1260T not available on the 775T. We'll see how it goes, but at $10-15 it's not that big of a deal, and the 1260T is small enough that it's not going to clutter up my carry on bag too much. The biggest limitation I see for using it as a pedestrian is the 3 hour battery life, and most battery specs tend to be optimistic at that. I'll need to turn it off when I'm not actually looking at it for directions or see if it has a lower power mode.

CityExplorer Maps

Please let us know what you think about those maps when yu return.

I'm doing a European Cruise in Sept. and will buy the CityExplorer maps to put on my 885 if you think they make a difference.

Thanks.

.

CityXplorer maps use the exact same map data that City Navigator maps use. The advantage of CityXplorer maps are that they include Enhanced Pedestrian Mode (EPM) extended data which will route you in pedestrian mode using public transportation methods (buses, subways, trains, etc) on those GPS units that support EPM. Those units are currently the 1xxx series only.

Paris - OSM Open Street Map

grin I don't know anything about the City Explorer maps, but I have used City Navigator (Garmin) as well as France Topo Maps to navigate Paris. Very recently, I loaded OSM on to my Colorado 300 and was impressed with the accuracy and detail of information available. I use OSM on my bicycle trips and hikes all over Paris and would use it anywhere in France. It syncs nicely with the Mapsource on my PC too.
