Garmin 1690

Is anyone having erratic problems with Their 1690.

Mine powers off, hangs up on startup, and sometimes directs me to the wrong location.

Hangup on Startup

Has anyone experienced a hangup while loading maps?

I usually have to turnoff and restart

Dan

tried a hard reset?

I dont have that particular unit. Have you tried doing a "hard reset"? Basically turning on the unit while holding down the lower right portion of the screen until it says something like "are you sure you want to delete user settings". Mor on the procedure here: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26136 Hope this is of some help to you. smile

Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes. I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.

I have had a bunch of

I have had a bunch of problems with mine. Same as what your having....along with the Nu-Link NOT working....voices that talk & pause for a moment & then start speaking again. I am on my 3rd one. I just got it from Garmin the other day & I already have it up on E-Bay. I didn't even take the new one out of the box or anything. I am not going to go with another Garmin until they start making better products. Their latest batch of GPS units are junk!

Backup

Is there a way to backup your addresses before you reset your unit?

backing up

backing up is best done with Mapsource. My 1690 did not come with mapsource like my 2610 did however.

I did notice that resetting the unit did not erase user data (favorites) If I wanted them gone I had to do that in tools

Don't quote me on this , but I believe that resetting the unit will not erase your favorites

That's my story and I am sticking to it

If you do a hard re-set you

If you do a hard re-set you will lose your favorites.Connect gps to computer and go to the Garmin drive. In the Gpx folder you will see current.gpx .Make copy of it.After re-set rename the current.gpx to temp.gpx and paste back in the Gpx folder.

In Mapsource use the transfer function.

You've done the right decision and I should have done the same. No more GARMIN for me that's for sure I learned my lesson with my 765t. It was big mistake, I was listening to garmin loyalists...

Gamin

Is there anything special I show say to tech support to get them to replace the unit?

1690

I've reset the unit and it still hangs up. The 1690 Nuvi is terrible

1690 Problem

I have a brand new Nuvi 1690 and it works great - no problems what-so-ever. It is the best unit I have had. I would suggest you call Garmin Tech Support and get it replaced with a newer unit.

Hang ups

Is there a way to force the Nuvi 1690 to load maps when it hangs?

Without restarting?

Do you have the latest updates installed from Garmin??

I wonder if there is a software update that you may need for the Nuvi 1690. Have you checked the mygarmin.com web page to see if there are any updates available for your 1690 unit?

Problems

What will it take for Garmin to learn that once you lose your reputation for reliability, like Toyota & American cars 20 years ago), it's hard to regain that confidence. Better to have fewer updates but make them bulletproof!

Agreed...

I truly wish Garmin would actually test these "updates" (which most times cause new problems while fixing the old} before releasing them to the unsuspecting public.

Updates - Not That Simple

It seems the cause for freezeups may not be as simple as a defective update. See this thread on how an icon file can cause a freezeup -

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/28569

This could explain why some units, updated fully, operate perfectly, while others are a constant problem.

Garmin 1690 - locks up and reboots randomly

Yes. I have had nothing but trouble with the 1690 model. Mine locked up at boot sometimes where it just stayed at "Loading Maps...". Most other times duing giving directions mode, it just randomly rebooted. I was at version 3.00, GPS 4.10, Text 3.00, Audio 2.30, Bluetooth 1.70, GSM Firmware R71b00gg.Q2687G 2076944 072408 15:49, GSM Driver GSM_1690NA:2.20

I have since sent my unit back for a full refund and purchased a Magellan. I'm very happy now with Magellan, a much better unit and feature set.

Feature Set

What is different in the feature set?
