1490T files not in Garmin folder

I finally decided to purchase a new Nuvi to replace my trusty old 350 whose backlight has gotten dim over the years (anyone try to replace the backlight?). Anyway, I wound up buying 255 and 1490T refurbs within a week of each other. I immediately upgraded the map on the 255 (stupid me, because I know update will probably show up before my 60 days), but am holding off on the 1490T.

As a precaution, I backed up the entire internal memory of the 255 which had the familiar (at least to me) file structure, but when I got to the 1490T, the \Garmin folder just had a single XML file in it. I took me a while to figure that there was a hidden OS folder called .System that I had to expose in Windows XP by setting my Explorer options.

I apologize if this has been discussed elsewhere (I did a search) but since when did the map and system files wind up in .System? Can I still drop a gmapsupp.img file in the \.System folder safely? I've dropped a file generated from Open Street Maps into the 255 \Garmin folder and that works, but I'm afraid of messing up the 1490T.

Thanks.

Refurbs

I think that is the chance you take buying refurb units. Some are good others can present you with problems.

System folder in Nuvi 1xxx series

I found out elsewhere that the \.System folder takes the place of the \Garmin folder for maps and other system files in the Nuvi 1xxx series. I've pretty much filled up the internal memory, so I added a 4GB memory card to play with 3rd-party maps. The unit is like brand new without problems whatsoever. Much, much brighter and readable than my 350. Not bad a deal for less than $200 with a map update and a factory warranty, which is less than what I paid for the refurb Nuvi 350 years ago.
