Sent Back again

I've been having problems with my 885. This will be my 3rd one I'm sending back, at this rate I can buy a new TOM TOM soon.I will NEVER get another Garmin. I'm DONE!

That's too bad

Have had 3 Garmins (330, 340, Nuvi 260+) - have never had a problem

660

This is my second garmin, the first was a 660 it was perfect, i should have stayed with that one.

What kinds of problems?

Is it physical unit that malfunctions or is it software problems? What happens to them? I've had my 265wt for quite a while now and i haven't seen any problems and I'm curious what to look for.

885 Problems

I also have an 885 and it has been kinda prone to problems too.

Not a ton of proplems, but enough to make me think I should send it back to Garmin.

It just reboots for no reason, it locks up frequently and I need to remove the battery to get it to work again.

It freezes a lot when I do a search and am punching in numbers or letters.

I guess I oughta do it before it's out of warranty.

I Understand.

I'm on my 5th 765 (not counting my wife's). I really like Garmin's design, user interface, features, simplicity & Customer Service (they're the reason that I haven't given-up on them) but their quality is terrible. They've gone back for various problems (although all have had terrible touchscreens -including my current) & my units came from several batches over an entire year so it can't be said that they just had a bad run.

As a product designer, I've often argued to companies that had solid products that they also need to consider design as consumers look for the whole package. This is one of my first experiences with the other end of the spectrum.

I really hope they turn it around as I've used my Dad's TomTom but didn't like its features nearly as much as my Garmin.

I wish you the best of luck! You're not alone.

Maybe that is why the unit has been discontinued. To many problems. You might want to try the 1490T which I recently got from Costco...so far I think it is a great unit. Much better in terms of screen brightness, sound, size, etc than the 7xx or 8xx units. Just a thought....See the link below.

Have you tried a hard reset? My 765T exhibited similar problems until I did a hard reset.

It was discontinued because it has an MSN interface.

As a wise man once said, variety is the spice of life.
If you have another problem try a TomTom, you might just love one.

Last Time

This will be the LAST time I send it back to garmin. If it does it again I will just start looking at the TomTom.

Based on Curt's discovery

Based on Curt Hinson's discovery there is something wrong with a lot of the icons, have you tried deleting the icon files? It may not be the unit as much as the custom POI we load.

Whats it doing?

Steve - did I miss that - whats it doing wrong? Best of luck with it though, thats frustrating....

Whats it doing

Check this link out and you will see a screen shot I took. Look at the top where it tells you where the delay is and how long, you will see that is all grayed out. you are able to see it here but when your in the car you cant. The black letters should be white. This only happens every and and then.

Hi mbegly,

Yes... I've done a hard reset many times and the behavior on the 885 is still the same.

But thanks for the suggestion......

Regards

1 good 1 problem

I have a 660 which is still functional (wife uses it) but the bluetooth function has gone belly up. I now have a 780 which is working (fingers crossed) fine.

My 765T

I have had my 765T just shy of a month. It was having erratic screen problems and last weekend I decided to recalibrate. That worked fine and the screen issues went away. Then other problems started with crashes, traffic receiver going offline, etc. I finally did the hard reset by powering on while holding the lower right screen. That appears to have cleared up the issues that started on Monday but the screen is acting up again :/

I am waiting for the replacement to the 3.90 firmware before I decide the future of my 765T ownership. It will probably be my last Garmin.

With my 760, when traffic info is grayed-out, that means the info is not current because it lost the FM traffic signal. When I drive into another area of good FM reception, the grayed-out info turns back to the right color.

Hey if this is the only

Hey if this is the only problem, thats not so bad. Here in Phx by the time I get the trafic info it's old news and not there in fact it is never correct.

If you travel for work, I recommend the 1690 - the Google features and the Edge network make it a great tool. I have had very good performance with this unit.

This sounds like it could be it, but why couldnt garmin tell me this. As far as getting another garmin ( 1490 ) I have to think real hard about getting any Garmin.
