855 did it again

The 855 did it again today. It not only switched from Jack, which I normally use to Jill, it also switched my coordinate format from DD MM.MMM to DD.DDDDDD. I called Garmin and their tech support said they were working on several software bugs, but they said I was the first one to report the problems I'm having. They wanted to know if I wanted to send it in but I told them the problem is so intermittent that they may never experience it. As long as it doesn't affect the main functions of the GPS I'll just wait and see if they come up with a software fix.

I noticed last week end using my 855, the screen suddenly dimmed before I realized the power supply cord was unplugged. After I plugged it in, the screen just went crazy, changing from closeup view, to turn lane view, back to normal view when I was not even moving. It finally "relaxed" after about 2 minutes of this activity and was normal from then on.

I guess the moral of the story is to shut the unit down before plugging it into any power supply.

Do you think Garmin has any units that do not have bugs. I think they need to clean house in their engineering department and hire some folks that are smarter....

figured it out

I think I may have figured it out why the 855 changed voices and also changed the coordinate format the one time.

Thinking back, both times it sat for about a week without being used and when I plugged it into the power supply it took awhile before it came on. I'm just thinking that when the battery gets that low it does flaky things.

You don't think Garmin writes their own software do you. That's all farmed out, just like the design and manufacture of the units. Garmin is just a marketing group, they buy the units, warehouse them and ship to the retailers. I would be willing to bet that they don't even handle their own Repair & Returns.

Where did you get that information?

You need to read this because your asumptions are incorrect

You need to read this because your asumptions are incorrect. This is a direct quote from the Garmin site:

"Garmin is a global company with offices in the United States, Europe and Asia. At these facilities, we carry out various stages of product development, from initial concept to shelf-ready unit. Our business structure is based on performing all design, manufacturing, warehouse and marketing processes in-house. We call this process vertical integration, which allows Garmin to maintain a high level of quality and respond more quickly to the ever-changing marketplace."

My 750 was made in Taiwan. There are bunches of companies in Taiwan, S. Korea, Hong Kong, The Philippine Islands, etc who will design, manufacture, brand and package the device of your choice. They do ALL of the design and development. You import the device, already packaged, you don't even have to glue on your company name.

There is nothing wrong with this, a lot of very high quality electronics come out of these countries. Companies many time the size of Garmin utilize these services.

And if you really think about it, "vertical integration" says absolutely nothing about how a company does business. A contract employee is lower on the totem pole than the CEO so a company with only contract employees is "Vertically Integrated".
