Custom POI Not At correct location

I have created a csv file in notepad.
-123.45678, 12.34567, My_POI
I used the poi downloader from Garmin and the result is a location 49 miles SE of where it should be.

I have removed the file; deleted the excel file; recreated the file and tried again 3 times with the same result. I even opened up the excel file to verify that I did not mis-type.

I even put the nuvi into GPS Sim mode and set the custom poi as my start point and whent to where am I and the coordinates don't match my input.

Any Help Please.

Try reading this on the Garmin website converning POI CSV files.

My guess is you need to convert or reconvert the lat long numbers into the correct format that the Garmin expects. Try changing the numbers to what the Garmin says the location should be.

Make sure your unit, and program(s) are set to decimal settings. Or, the same settings at the very least.

Are you on a boat?

The coordinates you gave are way out in the Pacific ocean, unless my slip stick is busted.

Given the sequence of the numbers, I guess maybe you are pushing our leg, eh wot?

Location problem

What is the address you are trying to get the coordinates for?

Eh-wot?

I think fhmjr is just using that as an example. He may not want the real location posted on a site that has millions of viewers per day.

fhmjr, do as others have suggested. Set you GPS to decimal and enter your coordinates as decimal values.

Try this

I would like for you to try this.

Go to Notepad or Wordpad and type in the following.
“-123.45678,12.34567,something,somewhere” (leaving off the quotes)

Save the file somewhere by doing this: in the menu bar, click on File, then click on Save As. In the Save As dialog box that pops up, enter “fhmjr.csv” (this time including the quotes) in the “File Name:” box and save the file as a “Text Document”. This will result in a file correctly named FHMJR.CSV.

If you do not already have it, download Extra POI Editor (EPE) from http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor and install it.

Open EPE. Open the file FHMJR.CSV. It will have only one entry. Double click on that entry and you will see a “Google Map” type dialog box with your entry somewhere in the Pacific ocean (as indicated above by Evert).

You can actually use this dialog to grab your coordinate and put it where you know it to be. I will leave this exercise to you as experimentation with EPE will be helpful to you.

Good luck

What reference system is being used by source of the coordinates

Well then, some of the difference of 49 miles may be due to the use of different Geodetic Datums. POI Loader assumes that coordinates are relative to WGS-84, was that the Datum used by the source of the coordinates in question?

What is the source - is there a possibility that there was a blunder in establishing the coordinates?

Also is there any chance that an error was made while converting units from degree, minutes, seconds (or some other) to decimal degrees?

thanks all

Thanks jackj180 you were correct on both counts. The coordinates were an example of the format that I typed. And, when I was able to switch the the unit to decoimal all worked fine.
jgermann thanks I will experiment with the EPE.
