Nuvi 1690 vs my older Nuvi 680

I just purchased a Nuvi 1690. I still have my older Nuvi 680 and have done a little comparsion testing of each. Thought I would share some of my findings:

Nuvi 680 purchased when they first came out - maps never updated, but latest firmware loaded.

Nuvi 1690 purchased a week ago, updated the to the latest maps and software.

1690 Screen - brighter and looks better than 680 however the glare is worse and the fingerprints are worse on the 1690. Still, this is not real bad

Acquiring Satellites - 1690 acquires satellites in about 5-15 seconds whereas the 680 sometimes takes minutes.

Following your route - 1690 computes much quicker, if it needs to recompute your route, it does it almost instantaneously. The screen is laid out much better. On the 1690, the speed limit is on the lower right hand corner in grey. I traveled from Phoenix, AZ to Los Angeles, CA and the speed limits were almost always correct. Your speed limit is right next to the speed limit and if you go 1 mile over it, your speed limit changes to red. A very nice feature and is on the main page. Also, in the upper left, the 1690 shows you how far to your next turn and has an arrow showing the direction you will be turning. If you are on a major freeway say with 4 lanes, and another freeway is coming up on the 2 lanes on the right, it shows all 6 lanes and the lanes that you should not be in are in grey instead of white. Nice feature. Also, if you are in 3d mode, it actually shows you the same signs as the freeway. No more wondering what lane you need to be in. The lane assist is fantastic.

Routing - Well, the 680 doesn't have it. If you want to go somewhere but you want to have different routes during the trip, the 1690 handles this easily.

Nulink Feature - 680 doesn't have it. I haven't used all the features yet, but the Google feature is nice. You can use Google to find a destination as well as the regular way. The verdict is still out on the traffic reporting but it seems much better than my traffic reporting on the 680. The nulink feature has local weather info, airline flight status, a where am I feature, fuel prices (reg, premium, and diesel), theater locations with what is playing and times, and many more features I haven't used yet.

Latest Maps - Since I never updated the 680, many roads where I live were not there. The 1690 loaded the latest map and now many of the streets are there and it is routing me differently. This is much better. I now don't have to listen to rerouting - make a U turn over and over again.

So far I am very impressed with this new unit. I highyly recommend it

Thanks for the info. I'm looking at getting a 1690 pretty hard. Especially since I found out the nulink thing was free for 2 years and only $5 a month after that. Sounds like a good deal.

Thanks for your input. I currently have a 370 and was looking into "upgrading" the unit, but wasn't sure. Your review/comparison sounds promising.

Review of 1690

I will continue to review this unit and follow up on the review later. I plan on putting both my units side by side to see how they compare. I will continue to look at other features on the 1690 and will let everyone know how it works. I'm going to Alaska in July for 3 weeks and plan on testing it out pretty thououghly.

I have had my 1690 now for a few weeks and LOVE it

It takes a while to recharge the battery - but I almost never use it without it plugged in -

I upgraded from the 350 - a well needed upgrade!

Loading data in is fast - directions are accurate - the layout is great on the screen. I can see where some people would be annoyed with the ads that pop up - but it hasn't honestly bothered me at all yet.

The one thing that, at least to me, is kind of a pain, is that if your are looking for your favorites - once you hit "where to" the favorite's icon isn't on the top of that page - one must hit the arrow or scroll down to find it - it would have been HUGELY more convenient to not have that extra step to use favorites....other than that.....love the blue tooth and everything else that the 1690 has.

I do wish that I didn't have to by a new memory card for the upgrade - but oh well - the upgrades greatly outweigh the criticisms.

Thanks for posting. I got

Thanks for posting.
I got the 885T with 2010.2 map so I will wait a couple more year before upgrade.
Does anyone have comparison for 1690 vs 885.
Enjoy your trips.

OPlease let us know

Its almost that time for me to get a full upgrade...so I am very interested in this model.

Thanks

It's those changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes nothing remains quite the same. With all of our running and all of our cunning, If we couldn't laugh, we would all go insane.

I am also do for an upgrade,

I am also do for an upgrade, but when I was in CES in Jan.2010, it seems like the 1690 will be here for sometime, I don't know if Garmin is going to be coming out with a new unit this year.

1690 vs 680

Thanks for the quick review. I'm also considering making the upgrade from a 680- but will probably wait til the price comes down a little.

MP3 Player

The Garmin website only shows 3 models with mp3 players and this is not one of them. The mp3 player is the one feature I use the most on my 660 and why I keep it.

Is Garmin doing away with the mp3 player as a feature on new models? That could be a deal-breaker for me when it comes time to replace my 660.

1690

I've had the 1690 for about a month, great unit. For those looking to get a good deal, watch best buy, I picked mine up for $350 at bb. They seem to go on sale every other month. You can send google map content to it much easier and the google search function is awesome for finding people and places. I would highly recommend this unit. My last gps was the 285wt and I loved the moving weather radar feature.

Report soon

I have had this for about three weeks an dhave only used it here locally...The ad pop up are not a big deal is my first thought..second is the small text on the header is sometimes really hard to read for some of us..Other thoughts soon..
