Lockups

I upgraded the map in my 750 last night to 2011.1. The upgrade also updated my OS to 4.90. I have done that twice now and each time I end up with a different lock up scenario. This time we were following a Route this morning while listening to an audio book. The navigation prompts were much louder than the book audio. So I went into Tools>settings>volume and lower the navigation level and raised the media level while the mp3 was playing. The unit locked up as soon as I exited the tools and entered the map mode. This happened twice in about 5 minutes. And before anyone says it, yes I did do a cold reboot before we left on the trip. I wonder how long it will be before Garmin issues a fix for this that will break something else.

Tonight I roll back to 4.8 and put up with the false battery warnings.

Have you done a hard reset after upgrading to 4.9 ?

For the record...
My wife and I both have 750s with 2011.1 maps. Both 750s have different chipsets and both have been running 4.9 firmware since 10/10/2009, we don't listen to audio books but we listen to MP3s all the time. Neither 750 has ever locked up on us with 4.9.

Prior to the 4.9 update, the only time we ever experienced lockups (very rarely) was when we were using the audio player.

If you had any saved routes you should also re-do them when you update maps in that thing as they will rarely work correctly as they no longer match the maps they were created for.

You hit the nail on the head with the old routes, Frank.

Ah! I had issues with custom routes as well. I just upgraded to 2011.10 and by chance reinstalled the custom routes as well. I noticed they were working correctly again. It didn't occur to me they were dependent on the map version. They appear to use latitude/longitude coordinates so I assumed they were compatible with whatever map was installed. Guess not...

My 1490T

has also experienced the lockups, along with random reboots, after the upgrade. Crazy.

One of the sad things about the new garmins is that they don't automatically fix your routes for you (but easily could).

From the good old days... I have a 2610 and when I used to update the maps It had a similar problem with saved routes and the GPS would simply pop up a dialog screen that would essentially say.... "Your saved routes were created with a different version of the maps, would you like me to fix them for you?" yes/no? And it would proceed to fix them all.

I guess those days are long gone. LOL.

The little person inside the GPS that did the route fixes was laid off a long time ago grin

Laid off, or outsourced ?

And depending on the answer, more questions can be raised grin

A funny video on the subject, and please do take it on the light side !

Ain't nuthin' never just right to do the things you wanna do when you wanna do them, so you best just go ahead and do them anyway ! (Rancid Crabtree, from Pat F McManus fame)

No lock-ups

Still using the old 750 with latest software and maps. No issues with lock-ups, although I don't use the audio player.
