NAVTEQ has Resolved Your Map Report

I've just received a response from NAVTEQ regarding a map error report I submitted. Unfortunately the report was from February 2008, but it is nice to know I could help. Recently I sent a map error report to Garmin and received a response in two days. Garmin receives their map information from NAVTEQ so who knows when the error will actually be resolved but it was nice to know my submission was being addressed.

I know I'm whining but really I just wanted to warn anyone making a report that it may be some time before you actually get a resolution. If you have an immediate concern it might be best to try your GPS company first.

All contacting Garmin did

All contacting Garmin did was get you an automated response and, most likely, nothing more. Garmin doesn't control what goes in or gets corrected on the maps. Even though NavTeq got your request, it could still be a LONG time before you see it reflected in a map update.

Not so

Not true, I got an honest to goodness response from a Garmin tech who explained the error and even gave a date for a resolution. True it is NAVTEQ who must resolve map errors but at least Garmin responded to my report. An immediate response says "we care enough to read your report in a timely manner".

Garmin tech does a pretty

Garmin tech does a pretty good job of responding most of the time. They are better than tomtom and 50 times better than magellan.

Acknowledgement

About a year ago, I submitted a correction to NAVTEQ where the map showed a road crossing a creek, only problem is the bridge was replaced with a bypass about 20 years ago... They did acknowledge at the time that they would look into it. Never heard any more, but the 2010.40 maps have it correct. These things do get fixed in time.

the newest NAVTEQ maps are much different than Garmin maps

Even though Garmin takes map submissions, they can't do anything other than what you do by going straight to NAVTEQ and make your own submission and buy doing so will be faster because the report is instant:

You can also go to the above link and see the newest NAVTEQ maps not yet available for your Garmin, but will be sometime the future.

Below are three questions and answers of why the newest Garmin NewMaps release is not the same as the newest NAVTEQ map.

Why does the tracking number show resolved, but Map Reporter does not show the change?
‘Resolved’ means that we have received your submission successfully and have made the changes to the map within our databases; have found the report to be a duplicate; or have already fixed it. Once the resolved Map Report passes NAVTEQ’s global quality control processes to verify accuracy, it can be included in the next release of the database, which is issued quarterly.

When will any map changes be available on a product I can buy?
Once we release the change in our database, it still needs to be incorporated into our customer applications. In some cases, this can be a matter of months. With more complex applications it can be over a year.

Why does my GPS unit map differ from your website?
Once we release the change in our database, it still needs to be incorporated into our customer applications. In some cases, this can be a matter of months. With more complex applications it can be over a year.

Then it wasn't a NAVTEQ map error, rather a Garmin algorithm error if he could give you a resolution date date.

What was the error?
What was the resolution date?

Would like to see if an honest to goodness Garmin tech is blowing smoke up your... well you know.
