Noob question on POI Maps

Hey there. First post with a dumb question. I have a Garmin Nuvi 200w. I downloaded a few POI files and uploaded them. I can see them in the Extras menu. When I select them, they will show the distances.

Now here is the dumb question part. Is there a way to get all the POI to show up on the map while I'm driving. I've set the distance alerts as well. I downloaded the Target POI and drove right past it without any icon or indication. When I goto the POI it will show that I just drove by it but it doesn't display on the map by default.

Is that normal behavior? For certain features, like red light cameras, I would assume it would be putting them on your map for you.

Let me know if my question makes sense. Basically I want to know if there is a way to get all my POIs to show on the map view. I don't need directions, just need to see them there.

Thanks.

Garmin units

If your garmin is like my 1390T, No the POI do not show up on the maps, now if you select a POI and hit GO it should map to it, and show an Icon on the map, The defualt Icon may be a small dot, so I usually go into my favorites and change the icon.

POI's do not show up on your maps, Favorites do. For example I am in an area of texas, I found about 10 or 15 places to eat that I liked so I added them as favorites and now as i am driving a Icon for the places shows up on the maps. On the same hand I have downloaded about 22,000 (yes 22,000) POIs from this web site and NONE of them show up on the driving map unless I set them as a favorite. cool

ok that's kinda what i

ok that's kinda what i thought. guess it's too much processing to look at all your POIs and overlay them on the map.

so how is something like red light cameras helpful? do i need to go in my spare time to all ones near me and add them as favorites?

My custom POI's show up

On my 265w my POI's show up at 300ft. Most say they do not until 200ft zoom. Download the icon's for you POI's also, this way you get the icon instead of the default dot.

Mapping POI

Welcome to the group.

As to getting custom POI to display on the map the question is did you also load an icon for the POI?

You specifically mentioned the Target file, so you should have both the Target.CSV or GPX file and a Target.BMP file in the same folder which is then loaded by POI Loader. Setting an alert is something you have done. And yes, you have to be zoomed in fairly close to have the store show on the map.

Something else to consider, think of proximity alerts as a rectangular box about 150 feet wide and extending the length of the alert distance around the cooedinates. If your travel touches the box you get an alert otherwise not.

do you have to do anything special or do all your POIs show up on the map?

i have downloaded the icons. i'll do some more testings.

glad to hear the POIs will appear w/o having to manually select them all.

yep loaded the icon and csv file. i'll play with the alerts, extend their distances.

You will not get alert if

You will not get alert if the coordinates are located more then 50 ft off the road of travel. You can increase that by creating a radius alert using the word TourGuide to the file name.See http://www.poi-factory.com/node/13958 .TourGuide has to be spelled as shown.TourGuide works well for getting alerts from interstates when locations are off the main roads.I set at 1 1/2 miles. If you decide you want voice alerts see http://www.poi-factory.com/node/25730

My pois=main folder

TourGuide Target.csv
TourGuide Target.bmp
TourGuide Target.wav

Or
My pois =main folder

Target TourGuide.csc
Target TourGuide.bmp
Target TourGuide.wav

Another thing to note

What I notice on the Garmin units is they Do not allow you to turn on all the POI's on the driving maps like you see on other GPS units.

I have 2 other GPS units where I can go in an turn on all the Gas stations, stores, food places, etc, and all the icon show up on the driving maps so you can see them while your tooling along on the road.

The Garmin Nuvis don't do that, If you set favorites and then set an Icon for them they magically show up on your driving maps. For instance I have a building I con at the place I am coming to work, and a Bed Icon at the hotel location, becuase they are favorites they are on my driving maps wether I select them or not when I pass by them they are Icons on my driving maps.

Another way I make my poi

Another way I make my poi showing in my nuvi 200,
is to give it a speed alert of 199 kmh (124mph),then
the poi icon wil show up in any zoom level 36 sec before I reach the poi.(ore another distance if you set it in an gpx poi file)without getting an alert.
Unless youre speed is near the alert (124mph).

cool i'll give the TourGuide

cool i'll give the TourGuide trick a try. so how does the red light camera alerts work?

Redlight alert

Certain key words in a file trigger alerts.Redlight will give you a 1/4 mile alert.Once you load them to your unit they are ready to go using poiloader in the express mode. Here is some info from poiloader help.

POI Loader determines whether or not a file contains speed and proximity alert points based on specific criteria. Use the following information to help you create Custom POI files:

If a file name contains a valid speed number or if all records in a file have speed encoded in the name, then all records in the file will include speed and proximity alerts. For example, a data file with the file name "Speed_30" generates speed alerts of 30 mph (or kph, depending on the type of units selected in POI Loader) for each POI in the file.

If the file name contains "redlight", POI Loader assumes all records in the file have proximity alerts with a distance of 400m/0.25 miles.

If a file contains "GATSO," "mobile," "SPECS," "safety," "speed," or "camera," but does not have a speed, POI Loader uses a default alert speed of 0, which means you will always be alerted. You can override this default value by entering the speed in Manual mode.

You can also enter speeds for each POI individually by adding the @ symbol and a number after the name of the POI. For example, a Custom POI named "Ridgeview@25" would create a POI named "Ridgeview" with a 25 mph speed alert.

POI Loader calculates proximity alert distance based on speed. You can enter proximity alert distance for individual Custom POIs in a .gpx file. You can also enter proximity alert distance for all Custom POIs in a data file using Manual mode.

I'm Still Amazed

I frequently learn something new or re-learn something when someone asks a question like this. I joined a bit over a year ago and the community here still amazes me with the helpfulness that is ALWAYS offered. Even if it's a terse message and link to a previous thread. It is given out of generosity and never out of malice. Thank you again to all of the great contributors here!

Icon Size

cool

Some of the Icons on this site are not to proper format... If the size is not 24x24 or smaller they will not work!

For example... the state lines icon is wrong and would not work until I finally figured it out and re-sized the icon to 24x24.

Therefore, please keep this in mind when trouble-shooting a problem.

1390t question

I also have a 1390t but I can't view any custom poi's on the extras\custom poi's screen. This is after the poi loader says successfully loaded 7058 poi's.

Any tips?

Try this

Any tips?

Get a manual at http://www8.garmin.com/support/userManual.jsp

1300 series - To view your Custom POIs, touch Where To? > Extras > Custom POIs
To change the Proximity alert settings, touch Tools > Settings > Proximity Points > Proximity Alerts

Connect your 1390 to your computer.
A. Go to Windows Explorer and select the Drive called “Garmin Nuvi”
B. In the left pane, left double click on the Garmin folder and then left double click on the POI folder

Do you see a file named "poi.gpi"?

When you touch extras and see custom pois are you also touching custom pois?If you are getting message they have been loaded they should be there after you re-boot the gps.

1390t

Touching the custom poi header did the trick. Somehow I though they would be listed under the header when I navigated to the screen.

Thanks,

Glad you got it.You are not

Glad you got it.You are not the first one to do that.Easily overlooked.
