Question about Traffic on 660.. Menu Page Traffic Icon Color

On Menu Page of my 660

Where To
View Map
Travel Kit

At lower right corner is an Icon for Traffic...Went back and forth on expressways today in Chicagoland, and today the traffic logo was Grey...

Last week, after re-entering the Traffic Activation codes, I thought this was yellow....

I can't seem to find any information as to what the grey color means....
I thought it was yellow last week, now it's grey...

Anyone know more about this?

Thanks...

Gray

Gray means the traffic data signal is not being received. Is it an FM signal on the 660?

This is with the 660 rolled

This is with the 660 rolled back from V4.80 to V4.70

I'll go out and check the LED's on the Plug....

OK... I've got some answers,

OK... I've got some answers, and some questions...
This is a Nuvi 660 with V4.70 firmware.

If the Icon is GREY, it is not getting data, and the receiver (Power Plug) LED's are Green (Power) and Yellow/orange or Yellow/orange Flashing slowely (about once a second or two)...

IF the data LED on power plug goes Green, then, the on menu screen Traffic Icon goes BLUE, and if I hit it... I get a regional map with Yellow lines for slow traffic...

However, if I sit and don't do anything... LED on Power plug goes from Green to Yellow/orange in a minute or so...
Leaving me to wonder if Traffic is intermittant data?
If so, how often is it transmitted?

Thanks

Antenna is in power cord.

Try hanging the power cord over the rearview mirror.

The antenna for the FM Traffic receiver is in the lower portion of the cord, so it is important to get it as high as possible for best reception.

Note: Leave a little slack in it so that you don't "stress" the cord where it exits the adaptor. Too tight for too long will cause it to break one or the conductors.

Just by hanging the cord over my mirror to get the slack off the floor, doubles the reception range for me.

Fringe area?

Perhaps your in a fringe?

metricman Has it right to improve signal.
Chicago coverage maps, darker green is generally a stronger signal.

I'm in Skokie, with Navteq service.... Best signal
That's in-between Evanston and DesPlanes...

So, should it be continuous, or intermittant?

Thanks to Metricman!

2 Points to Metricman!!

I spent morning in car going around Chicagoland... I Decided to try Metricman's suggestion of draping cord for Nuvi mount up to rear view mirror, and down to traffic receiver in lighter plug....

Must have stopped and started car/Nuvi 6-7 times in my travels.....

This is with a Nuvi 660 with lifetime traffic, that I Down-Graded from V4.80 to V4.70 a week or so ago, to get around the V4.80 firmware bug where traffic Red/Yellow/Green lines are not displayed with V4.80 Firmware on a Nuvi 660.
The Down-Grade blew away All Favorites, Traffic License, and other settings, and other than a couple test rides to verify all was back operational and re-configured properly after the downgrade, today was the first time other that I had could do an in-Depth test of Garmin and Traffic since the Downgrade...

Prior to Downgrade, with V4.80, Traffic did not display Red/Yellow/Green Lines on map in the traffic section...

After the V4.70 Down-Grade, traffic DID DISPLAY Red/Yellow/Green Lines on top of map in the traffic section.

Following Metricman's suggestion, I wanted to improve the traffic reception too (which sometimes worked and sometimes didn't), but this is back when I would carefully lay the cable from Nuvi mount to Traffic receiver carefully out of the way, because the installation looked neater, and drew less attention...
Without a doubt-- Running the cable from Nuvi Mount, up around the rear-view mirror then downward toward traffic receiver in lighter plug LOOKS UGLY, but works FANTASTIC!!! Had 100% Success with Traffic in the many stops and starts of the Garmin Today!

Great Idea! 2 POINTS FOR METRICMAN!!! grin!

P.S. I'm guessing that my neatly hiding the cable has been the cause of my earlier posts, when I claimed that I never saw the 'Traffic demo' when I first purchased the 660 in 2007!

Owning a Convertible

JanJ,

That is one of the advantages of owning a convertible, no problem with reception being blocked by the car. smile
