NUVI 1490t does not enough space for POI files

I have a Nuvi 1490t and when I tried to copy the POI files to the 1490 using POIEDITOR the Nuvi runs out of space. I've eliminated some of my POI files to get it to load.
What files can I delete on the Nuvi besides the cars and voices?

This is from Garmin support.

If you receive an error message stating, "There is not enough free space on your Garmin GPS, you need an additional XX MB on your Garmin GPS for the application to continue," please follow these steps to free up more space on your nuvi:

Connect the nuvi to the computer with a USB cable
Double-click My Computer or Computer on your desktop
Double-click on the GARMIN drive listed under devices with removable storage
Double-click on the Garmin folder
Double-click on the Voice folder
Delete any unused voice files (be sure to keep your preferred language)
Return to the Garmin folder
Repeat steps 5-7 with the Text and Help folders
Keep the help file you need.

What POI Files are you copying?

What POI files are you copying to the 1490? The 1490 should have several hundred megabytes of free space available from the factory.

If you place your raw files into a single folder you can use POI Loader to compile them into a single file that will reside on the Nuvi.

Unfortunately not several

The 1490 doesn't have "several hundred megabytes" of free space available from the factory, although it should have enough for many thousands of Custom POIs.

My 1490 came with only 128MB of free space. That was with 2010.10 maps and since every map update since then has been larger than the last one, we can assume that a new one with 2010.40 maps will have something less than 128MB free.

Deleting all voice, text, and other language files that are not needed will free up a lot of valuable storage space.

My 885 had a lot of free space which is what I was basing my statement on. Sounds as if the nickle snatchers figure if they save a nickle on each unit by limiting the amount of memory...

Pretty Standard

The total storage space is 2GB on the 1490 which is the same as it is for the majority of Nuvi devices, although some have 4Gb. The total space on the 1490 is reported as 1.76GB which I guess is a 2GB storage device formatted FAT32.

Found that I had to delete the files from my 1490T

For some reason (and I've been too lazy to figure out why), my 1490T doesn't recognize my mini-SD card when I try to load POIs from here on to it. And that's even though the POI Loader sees it in the selection box.

So recently I deleted all but the essential voice, help, and other text files to make room for the 600 files and 670,000+ POIs I wanted to load. Fortunately that did free up enough space on the unit itself.

Even if you wish to keep your POI's on the MicroSD card.....

Even if you wish to keep your POI's on the MicroSD card, the annoying thing about the 1490T is that it will prompt you every time you turn on your unit, to move the POI's to the internal memory. Unlike earlier Garmin models, you can't skip this prompt with the 1490T.

not enough space

My unit has less space because of the map updates. Everytime you update your maps you loose space. With 2010.30 installed I have 35.9 MB FREE. I guess Garmin did not plan for the future by providing a larger HD to start with. Larger maps every quarter, and more POI loaded by the end-users, language files, and help files. Oh well I guess I had to delete the extra language and help files if I wanted to install more POI.

Nor the . . .

Nor the 1690 - it's not a big deal tho - I use an 8GB micro sdhc card for all of my TourGuide POIs.

I had that problem with my 880 which when I got it only asked once each time I use poi-loader, then sometime later it began asking me each time I turn my Garmin on, Garmin had an update and all of a sudden the unit went back to normal, have you by chance updated your Garmin's software?

Software is up to date.

Unfortunately, my firmware is up-to-date. While I can keep my POI's on the microSD card, I get the annoying prompts to transfer it to the Nuvi's internal memory. These POI's hardly take up any space; so I just transfer them to the Nuvi rather than seeing that prompt every time I turn on the GPS.
I once complained to Garmin about this and they gave me the song and dance that it is better to have the POI's in the internal memory anyway; "they run more efficiently" that way. I really don't see any difference myself.

Annoying 1490T Prompt to copy POI files to internal memory

Just wondering, has anyone found a solution to this yet? It is very annoying, and I really want to keep the POI files on the SD Card.

So sorry....

I talked to Garmin yesterday about the issue and was told it is in the firmware. They also said if they took it out there would be people who would complain about that. What they need to do is have an option "don't show again" as that would solve everyones problem...If you took the card out for some reason and put it back in it could then ask the question again.

But with every other unit if you answer YES you are presented with another screen giving you the option to skip transfer with a Don't Ask Again check box.

I deleted one of my POI files that I had loaded on the units internal memory. Then I inserted my POI Micro SD card and it asked if I'd like to install the now missing POI into the units internal memory. I clicked on yes to install and that takes you to a screen that lists the poi I had removed. Just a box to mark with your touch and the file name: (1:/Garmin/poi/Aldi's.gpi) I then hit the return arrow and shut the unit off without the install being done. Then I turned it back on. I got the exact same screen again asking if I'd like to install the "New" Poi., so this unit does not have the option to "Don't ask again". It will ask you ever time you start the unit unless you actually load the Poi.

I would think this holds true for all the 1400 series, but I can't say that for sure.

I only have two British language (male and female) voices that speak the street names. I don't mind, but the female voice keeps calling access roads "slips." I might start hating it later on.

I guess I can download the American Englich voice from the Garmin Website.

Poi Loader

Try using the POI loader instead of the editor. The editor might be trying to load raw data that takes up a lot of room the loader compresses it into a smaller file.
