Apple IPad

I figured it was time to start an IPad thread. I'm excited about the possibility of my next GPS being an IPad application using the built-in GPS chip, memory, etc. As folks buy IPads, keep us updated as to what GPS app you are running and how you like it. I assume that iPad mounts and other third-party gizmos will also be available.

Onwards!

Ipad + Beanbag = Garmin?

Seems like the iPad could replace a Garmin GPS pretty easily with the right software. Yes, it's a big form factor, but pretty nice in a beanbag on your dash. Possible?

Only If

this was an actual Mac with iphone emulation, then I would have bought one.

I was waiting to see what Apple had in store with their tablet. When I heard the specs I went ahead and purchased a HP TM2 tablet instead.

With this iteration it just seems like a big touch/iphone. I already have an iphone and an ipod touch.

iPad: Not for me

The first generation iPad doesn't have GPS chip so all the navigation apps are useless without Wifi. It's has no USB or memory card slot. To my opinion Apple doesn't want to built with USB so they can rip off customer $100 bucks more for each tier of memory: $499 for 16G, $599 for the 32G and $699 for the 64G. The iPad that have 3G will cost you $130 extra. Properly cost Apple $15 for the GPS hardware.

I'll wait for the HP Slate which run Win7 and have USB port, memory card slot, camera, support flash and much more.

Great toy but will it blend?

I'm not one to go out buy

I'm not one to go out buy something because it's "new". I think the iPad will make a difference in mobile computing/communications but it is a new "gadget" right now. Like the iPhone (which I don't own)wait until it goes through several "generations" before purchasing one so that all of the bugs can be worked out and more useful applications are available and the device becomes more refined.

OK.....so where the heck am I?

In the dash...

Nuh-uh!

9.56" tall and 7.47" wide--that's a mighty big thing to have sitting on the dash... though here's a fairly creative IN-dash mount:
http://www.about-electronics.eu/2010/04/14/ipad-finds-a-home...

Still pretty kludgy... no way I'd do it to my car!

ipad

I'm waiting for the 3rd or 4th generation of this device before thinking seriously about purchasing it. Apple is already aware of some elements its left off the device (e.g. USB ports for external drives or memory sticks). Allow them to perfect the device with other customer complaints ... then buy the 'new and improved version' afterwards.

The 3G version, with GPS, *is* a first-gen iPad.

Cool

Great news!

Apple is often ahead of the curve with that.

That was in the past. I don't see it that way anymore. Remember the 1st gen iPhone with EDGE only while 3G has been around for years? Their excuse is 3G eats up battery like a hungry animal. Lame. If that's true, why would 2nd and 3rd gen iPhone come with a 3G chip?

They're doing the same thing now with the iPads. As others have said, there's a place for a camera but Apple seems to save it for the next gen iPads.

creeper wrote:

The ability to turn 3G on and off without contract. We dont' need 3G 365 days a year, only when we travel.

I agree. Some of us don't travel as much as others. I only want mobile internet connection while I'm on vacation. This is the only feature that is useful to me. I hope there's no sign up fee (in addition to the $15 or $30 fee) whenever we sign up for 3G data plan.

The hype about this product is amazing.

It's overpriced, won't come with free 3G, and Apple is the Darth Vader of open platforms. No flexible USB to attache a hard disk! You must be kidding.

If Microsoft tried to control the ecosystem the way Apple does, the antitrust types would have come down on them hard years ago.

no easy money

Apple is good on making money from people do not think there is money...
I do not know how popular this will be eventually. But, I still have my laptop, some functionalities could not be found in iPad which I feel needed. But, let's see how iPad gen 2 will be.

Here's an early review about the Slate:
http://www.electronista.com/articles/10/04/19/hp.slate.alrea...

"The HP slate was panned today in a test by a Spanish blogger who had early access. He described the system as "meh" and ultimately just a netbook with a touchscreen in place of a keyboard. The system doesn't really compete against the iPad at all but other netbooks, Conecti.ca said."

It was bound to happen.

Multi-tasking

I wonder if you can use the GPS and listen to iTunes at the same time?

--
Nuvi 760 (died 6/2013); Forerunner 305 bike/run; Inreach SE; MotionX Drive (iPhone)

Don't know for sure

because I don't have one, but if it's like the iTouch or iPhone, the answer would be yes. Apples iTunes at this time is one of the only apps that can run in the background simulating multi tasking.

With the OS upgrade coming soon, there will be a lot more simulated multitasking available.

Different degrees of multitasking to come

The apps that use the GPS will function even while iTunes is running.

With the coming of OS 4 this fall there will be different levels of multitasking available to developers. Developers will have a choice of degree of backround processes needed. Apps such as Internet radio will run the audio portion, while apps such as games will just stop where they are until the user returns to the game.

It's only going to get better...

For a first generation product it is impressive, especially as a device to consume media: surfing the Web, music, video, games, e-mail, books, etc. (not to do work or create, although some is possible). It is also a great alternative to the grayscale Kindle or even to those digital picture frames on the market. When multi-tasking comes soon (and a camera) it will be a treat to use also as a portable video-conferencing device, via Skype for instance. And I could see it as a great compromise between small GPS screens and floor mounting a laptop computer for vehicles.

Also, when Apple implements something it usually functions better than its competitors. Although the iPhone/iPod touch were late to the game with cut & paste, when they did implement it most felt it was very clever and practical, superior to other smart phones. And the same will likely be true with multi-tasking on the iPhone/iPad.

The only thing Apple ever created that was a bust was the G3 Cube computer (looked like a toaster, remember?).

a lot of miscues coming out of Supertino that died very early in the product cycle. Some got to the prototype stage where they were shopped around to various select user groups and pubs before being pulled. Look at how long the iPhone was shopped under a non-disclosure before it was released.

iPAD?

It sound cool, but until the price goes down, I would still rather a LAPTOP for only a few hundred dollars more... then I get a keyboard, expandable memory, USB, DVD, CD, camera...

...so far it seems like a gadget to suck away spare money.

Almost An iPhone

The iPad is like an iPhone that does not make calls. It would be funny to see people holding it to their heads though. I heard Steve Dahl talking about it on his May 13th or 14th podcast he has one and he didn't think it will be useful to him. His web site is dahl.com and he's also on itunes.

just curious

I wonder how far imbedded into your skull the iPad would go after an airbag inflation if mounted on the steering wheel like that?

It's precisely *because* they're run a closed system that Apple's hardware and software runs as well as they do.

Ipad GPS

Just saw the video featuring the ipad and velcro.

I'm guessing that the dash mounted option is using their maps app and not a gps program but I'm sure that will be along soon. Now the only issue would be getting stopped by the cops and charged with a distraction to the driver.

I think Mr. Jobs learned a lesson from there, resulting in the success of iPod and iPhone of today. Excellent example.

iPad not worth the money.

Only the ipad 3G will have the GPS chip. The wifi models will use the internet to pin point your location. You can't do much thing on your iPad compare to a laptop and for a 3G 64G model you can buy a nice laptop with Blueray.

Just my opinions.

Android tablets are starting to make more appearances. With the open architecture, they are selling for closer to $200.
