Firmware Updates

I have the nuvi 205w given as a Christmas gift from my son. I love it and use it everyday. My question is .. almost everytime i connect to mygarmin (once every two weeks)there seems to be a new software update (says firmware update while updating). Is this normal and ok to do every time what can they be updating? I ask here because garmin told me to search their forums and i did with no help and I have found this place to be far far far more helpful... Thanks for any input. Sorry if this doesn't belong here.

MyDashboard

It sounds like you are using MyDashboard instead of Webupdater. Most of the Garmin experts here prefer the Webupdater method, as it more clearly identifies firmware updates from other types of updates (voices, etc.). This has been discussed in other threads. Here is one to start with: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/23969

Don't use My Dashboard

The quick fix is to stop using My Dashboard. It will always tell you it is updating something while accessing your unit.

If you keep tabs on what is happening here on POI-Factory, you will see notes about any updates being available. There is no need to connect to Garmin unless you need something such as new vehicles and the occasional update. Just my 1 3/4 cents worth.

Download and use Webupdater

http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

and use it rather than myGarmin for GPS updates. Life will be so much better once you've switched.

[Edit] Darn, I respond after just six minutes and I'm beaten by more than one other user... sigh

6 minutes and help already

See that's why i asked here... I will download and try webupdater. Thanks for all the input already. I did do a quick search here but guess i didn't look thru enough pages . Thanks again everyone.

edit : Thanks Alandb exactly what was happening to me ..scary.. and CraigW for the site

6 minutes.. wonder what took

6 minutes.. wonder what took so long. This site is better than the phone line with garmin. You cant dial the phone and get to a techie in 6 min. smile

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Bought my first GPS in Jan., Nissan 750 Dash flip up. Liked it so much I just bought my wife the 755T for her bithday on the 26th. So I set it up and did the update Monday, being on dial-up it took several tries over 2 days since my Internet server drops me after 8hrs. It was the international voice updates, like I plan on driving to Belgium or Luxemburg. Well I kept with it till sucessful thinking there might be hidden valuable updates in the mess. Then I tried my 750 and kept getting booted at 9% or 10%. Came here to post if there was a better way, saw this thread, wow. Downloaded the Updater, then went to update the 750, found Tille, being in Arizona street names are funny. Will took about 2 hours, no hassle, bypassed about 15 hours of useless junk, Thanks.
I originaly came here for the Traffic and RL cams but you folks are great for knowing all the secret tricks that you would never find out in normal use.
