Camera opposition, Cleveland may be latest target of foes

The picture is getting a little fuzzy on future of traffic cameras in cities

Voters unplugged Steubenville's traffic cameras in 2006. Ballots cast in Cincinnati banned the long lens of the law from that city's streets two years later. Two communities outside of Columbus -- Chillicothe and Heath -- rejected photo enforcement last November.

Could Cleveland or another Northeast Ohio community be next?

Traffic cameras are no substitutes for cops

People want to kill the cameras.

No more Big Brother watching over us at intersections day and night.

No more surprise traffic tickets showing up in the mail.

No more whopping fines for speeding through a light just as it turned red.

A backlash is brewing.

Our Road Rant columnist, John Horton, wrote a story on Wednesday about a campaign to ban "the long lens of the law" from our city streets. Three states outlawed traffic cameras last year. Four Ohio cities have, too. Is Cleveland next?

Photo-generated citations dropped 13 percent compared to the previous reporting year, falling from more than 108,000 to 94,305, according to a city report released this week.

The city collected just over $8.25 million in fines on speeding and red-light violations captured by cameras, about $1.5 million less than in 2008.

Should ticket-generating cameras be used for traffic enforcement

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Should ticket-generating cameras be used for traffic enforcement? That question may be put before Cleveland and Garfield Heights voters this fall.

Both communities could see ballot issues Nov. 2 to ban the use of red light and speed cameras. A mix of organizations and residents pledged Saturday to launch petition drives to rid the streets of the photo-taking equipment. They've enlisted the aid of a Cincinnati group -- the Coalition Opposed to Additional Spending and Taxes, or COAST -- already involved in three successful anti-camera campaigns in Ohio.
The chairman of COAST, Jason Gloyd, spoke Saturday during a meeting at Cleveland's Beachland Ballroom.....

I hope they are successful

I hope they are successful in banning the cameras. It's good to hear someone is making the effort to have this issue put on the ballot.

From what I've read, every

From what I've read, every state that allowed the voters to decide whether to keep or get rid of the cameras, in each state/city, the cameras were voted out.

Let the governments find another way to "generate revenue" for their budget shortfalls that they helped create.
