Reset 265WT

I ran into a problem with my Garmin 265wt GPS today and was wondering if anyone else had any solutions to this problem.

In short, the GPS will not boot up any more with or w/o power connected to the unit. The only thing that comes up is the Garmin logo followed by "loading maps" and then it just shuts down. I've tried holding the upper left corner (as well as all the other corners down individually) while powering the unit on and the only thing that comes up is "Press dot" before it shuts down. I believe I had updated to the newest version before this happened and this is a refurbished unit. I am just short of opening the unit up with a torx screw driver underneath the sticker w/the bar code & serial # of the unit. Should I do that or is there another way to reset this thing? There are no reset buttons on the outside of the unit so I can't just push "reset" like some other Nuvi's I've come across.

Please Help!

.

This seems like a dead battery issue. I've had this happen on a nuvi 750. The battery will die to a point where it will not stay powered on but for a few seconds and trying to power the unit from the car adapter won't even power it on.

First, try and connect the unit to a PC using a USB cable. does the PC recognize the nuvi as a drive and can you access it's file system?

If you access the nuvi through USB, that's a good sign. Keep the unit connected to the PC's USB port and disable any power saving settings on the PC that may cut power to the USB ports in power savings mode. Let the unit charge overnight with the PC and try again.

Units in the state can usually be recovered by charging the battery with the PC...even an external Garmin charger may not do it either.

If this doesn't do it for you, you may have a greater issue.

A reset is performed on the unit by sliding the power switch to the "on" position and holding it there for ~20 seconds or so.

Did you try holding the power key

The owner's manual says there is a reset button on the bottom of the unit (my 200 had it under the serial number tag). Either that or hold the power key in the off position for 8-10 seconds.

.

I'm pretty sure the earlier 2x0 units were the only units with the reset button on the bottom edge of the unit (I had a 200 for a short time). Later 2x5 models use the power switch as the reset "button" as mentioned above.

USB to PC does not recognize unit

USB to PC = computer does not recognize unit is plugged in, but the unit does power on and "loading maps" does come up before shutting down and looping same thing. I'll try that power switch reset to the "on" position after leaving it on the USB to computer cable connected to charge the battery. Just curious, if while I hold the power switch to the "on" position the unit still turns off, is that a bad sign? Do I still hold the power switch even after the unit has turned itself off after the "loading maps" message appears? Thanks for the suggestions, and I'll keep you posted.

I had exactly the same

I had exactly the same problem
I was about to give Up when I tried erasing all the user data then it worked
you loose everything you had in it But you can reenter it.
press the lower right area of the screen while you turn it on.
A window will pop up allowing user data erase.
Push yes it will go through a scrolling activity bar then reboots.
Worked fine ever since

Before you do that.Make a

How can you back up anything

How can you back up anything if it won't even turn on?

Re-set

After letting it stay connected a while to the computer it may get enough charge that the user can get to the drive to save copy.If the need still exists to do a hard re-set.

not a battery problem

The issue I had had nothing to do with the battery.
I think somehow some "user" data got corrupted and during the boot up process it would just hang. Just like the problem Snoopyy is having.
After the user data delete it worked fine and the battery was at full charge.

Okay, so I tried getting to

Okay, so I tried getting to the reset prompt, but even while holding the lower right hand corner of the screen while it boots, it just shuts off after "loading maps".

Any other way to get to the reset? I've plugged it in for like 8 hours into the computer with it still doing the same cycle. Any other way I can get this to reset? Is there something I can do inside the cover after opening the sucker?

*BUMP* any other

*BUMP* any other suggestions? So far I've made a little progress. I can now get to the reset dialogue after holding the lower right corner of the screen. But after selecting 'Yes', no change in status happens. It still just reboots after the "Loading Maps" message displays. The same is true when I select "No". Earlier today though, I was somehow able to get the GPS to be connected and browsing the file system of the unit. I tried updating the firmware, but apparently WebUpdate recognizes it's already the most recent firmware. Yes, I tried installing the latest firmware again, but alas, still same predicament.

Hmm?

Something someone else reported struck a chord. Did you put a screen protector on the unit? If so, remove it. You may have some particle under it that is causing the unit to go into screen calibration mode by putting pressure on another part of the screen.

Could be

You are right, when I installed a screen protector on my new 265WT it kept going to the screen calibration screen at start up. I removed the protector and the unit went back to normal.
One other thing, I think if you open the unit you void any warranty that you may have. Give Garmin a call first.
