Be careful what you delete

I've seen a similar post for this question, but can't find it. I have a 765t and looking at it i see a bunch of files that i want to delete. But what's what in there? In Audible I had those book thingy's deleted them. Text, vehicle. voice, help, lex_pkg and reports are no brainers.
Mostly Language stuff, so i keep what i need and the rest went. Now then....under the Garmin directory I have some growing and new files. I'm suspecting looking at the dates that when i upgraded to the .40 maps it made new ones and left the rest behind. Couple of xml files. The ExtData directory now has 13 files in it all *.bin files. The RemoteSW also has an added file in it. Any one figured out what files one must keep? Do I have lots of room left on my Unit...answer is yes, don't like clutter and don't want more files every time i do a map upgrade or log into Garmins website.

Thanks

I hope you backed it all up before deleting. Asking for advice here is a really good idea before you do a scorched Earth maneuver.

I assume it's OK to delete

I assume it's OK to delete all non-english languages if one doesn't plan on using them?

Steve

.

It is... but again, I'd back them up. Most are available again through the Webupdater, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Question for Speed2

You say that you have plenty of space on the Garmin. Why are you so interested in deleting files?

Assuming "that is the way you are" may be the answer, why don't you do some research for us.

As Juggernaut has recommended, make a backup of what you have remaining on your Garmin (it will be what you reload when you hit the walls I am hoping you will agree to bang against).

Then, delete some more files (make a list of them) and then see how the Garmin performs after you properly remove the "drive" and fire it up. If it doesn't work properly, then reload some of the files until it does. Repeat. Delete more files. Repeat.

Let us know which files cause it to fail.

What concerns me is that any list of files that might be deleted (other that language, vehicles and the like) are subject to change by the software developers - there is just no good way to predict what will ALWAYS be superfluous.

Always backup and your time

Always backup and your time is better spend buying a SD card for extra space

It is also possible....

It is not a stretch to think that some file you delete may be needed for any future updates. The next time you upgrade your firmware, some files might be expected to be there. Without them, the update may fail. This isn't likely, but isn't out of the question either.

So be sure and backup before deletion.

I always back it up, like what i posted, some of these files are no brainers, like language files. I speak 2 languages so i keep those. I'm kinda chicken to delete some of this stuff. I thought of doing just what you mentioned, but then i would need also to test this out on the road and that's where i chickened out.

Fair Enough

Speed2, glad to know you always back up before deleting anything. That wasn't clear to me from the initial post, which is why I mentioned it.

Even though I would do not delete "unnecessary" files, I would still like to have an idea as to what they each do. I'll bet someone on the site already knows, so maybe they will post some links.

If you go to the Garmin site

If you go to the Garmin site and click search support.Key in free up space for maps.It will tell you what to delete.

I've removed, and backed up, 400 megs of unneeded files off my unit: Audible, Vehicle, Voice, Help, JPEG et al. But they still backed up. Everything else is intact.

Note - Keep the folders on the unit, and backup, then delete unneeded files!

I have done the same thing

I have done the same thing on my unit with no problems.I do a complete backup every time I update the maps. A while back when there was confusion about Dashboard and a few of us tried it.I found after running it all the files I deleted were re-installed.

True, but I haven't seen any detailed listings on other files. I'll just play it safe for now.

LOL me too, some of them are growing and some weren't there before i updated the map, and some showed up after the firmware update. It's MY NUVI now. Garmin tell me what all those files do. Tell me right now.

Click...damn it, they hung up on me.
