I'd love to hear feedback from Nuvi 660 users concerning their opinions of the 660's integrated FM TMC traffic receiver info vs. the Nuvi 680's Traffic Information from MSN Direct. I'd love to save $200 by buying the 660 if its traffic reporting capabilities are as good as or even better than the 680's, though the price of the 680 suggests otherwise. I've heard complaints about the traffic reporting MSN service with the 680. Does anyone out there have experience with the 660, 680 or both regarding the reporting of traffic conditions?
It is a great thing, that is
It is a great thing, that is for sure!
I don't think you would want
I don't think you would want the MSN only for traffic. It does just fine by me, but I like the other additives. Especially the ability to send things to my GPSr via maps.live.com.
While it is nice, try to think how much you will really use it. I use it often, so it is great. If you don't, don't bother. Save the money, and you still get an AWESOME GPSr. However, I am a guy who likes all the gadgets, so that's why I got it. I am glad I did.
660 vs. 680
I own both units. I prefer the 680 and MSN over the 660 and the FM unit. I always had a problem getting info from the FM unit and the 660. Compared, the MSN unit updates faster, and seems to be more accurate than the FM unit. I have since stop using the FM unit with the 660 and have gone to using the 680 all the time.
680 w/ MSN Traffic
I have the 680 with Microsoft traffic. I just finished a road trip and found the traffic pretty useless. When I got back to Phoenix, there was no traffic alert, and when I checked, the traffic information showed no problems on I 10 west into Phoenix. Well there was over an hour delay due to construction. The freeway was down to one lane. That'll teach me to rely on the traffic information. Worthless!

does the fm alert you with icons on the screen...the msn alerts me with traffic and weather alert icons
TMC has pop-up icons for delays

I have the TMC traffic cable, and it pops up a yellow construction icon on the screen with a number of the anticipated minutes delay on your route. When the icon pops up, it also speaks, "Traffic alert. xx minute delay." Tapping the icon brings up a menu for more information about the delay, Avoid, and to list all traffic data by road sorted by distance from your current location. TMC does not provide weather info.
msn traffic
I have the msn traffic but on trips I found it to be worthless unless you stay in one area. Buy the time it takes to download the new info your through that area.
Living with the 680 in Los Angeles
if anyone have experience with the traffic alert on the 680 MSN direct in the LA area, i would like to hear it, because i'm thinking about picking up this unit (or the 660), and i want to know if its worth the extra $100 or so.
basically i want the best traffic alerts.
calray,
I have the 680 with MSN and travel all over the Greater LA region. I would rate the traffic feature at 70% useful. I do not use the gas, weather or movietime features at all. I haven't made up my mind about renewing yet.
In a earlier post, someone mentioned that the 680 is compatible with TMC. Unfortunately, MSN vs TMS reviews are mixed, even in the same geographic area so that is a weak option to consider(?)

I have not activated the traffic service yet.
Can anyone comment on whether there are any improvements in either the FM Receiver, or the MSN, lately?

Bad Areas?
We have all felt uncomfortable in certain places, especially when you are a stranger. If you are white you may fear minority areas, and if you are black you may not feel too great about breaking down in a white neighborhood. I have had this issue travelling in Europe and the middle east ( where you can get killed by an angry mob for doing things seemingly harmless to westerners ). Macedonia is not a place where you should explore on your own, even if you are searching for your roots. Thankfully, traffic is not the issue in most of these places - but road conditions and festivals certainly are. If you do your homework you can avoid certain roads totally - this is why I still get my AAA triptick maps in the US.
