signs of times

With all the news of government budget shortfalls, I'm seeing an unbelievable number of speed traps the last few months. I'm not talking about how often I get stopped (no increase there, fortunately), but the sheer number of cops with their cruisers parked on the side street aiming the radar gun at the traffic, doing nothing but waiting for a speeder.

In the little town I lived before I moved here, the police chief told us he did not believe in speed traps because 1) he doesn't have enough budget or manpower to have a cop park their cruisers at one spot, 2) his resources are better spent patrolling the city, and 3) using traffic ticket to generate revenue is a wrong reason to write one. Consequently, the cops in that town wrote traffic ticket as part of their duties instead of their sole task.

But not here.

I won't debate whether speeding tickets should or should not be written. But I'm curious if anyone else noticed an increase in the speed traps.

More the reason people should be driving with a modicum of awareness and caution. Governments (all of them) are in bad shape these days, and are looking to generate revenue from additional sources. Personally, I prefer not to feed the 'bears'...

Besides, at the price of fuel, how much will you save in a month by just slowing down? A lot I'll bet.

There were several cars pulled over by police on a streatch of a highway we were on last week.
Glad we go the speed, or almost, limit! grin

Speed/Fuel Consumption

Over the past month, I've reduced my speed on the drive home (130kph to 110kph).

Fuel consumption has improved by about 1 L/100km.

Or I save $1/day on a 100km commute.

In the US, it would save me about 70 cents a day.

Its a little bit of money, but every little bit helps.

I've noticed the same thing

I have noticed the same thing. Even in places where there are not automated ticketing cameras, they are setting up more traps. Hopefuly, the economy will improve, as well as people getting fed up with it, and these traps will decrease some in the future, but for right now, watch out.

That's my perception of

That's my perception of Washington state, at least since a year after the recession officially began. Not necessarily a bad thing but wonder if the increase will be a perpetual state or just a temporary one (what, maybe 5 years, 10 years)?

With a jobless recovery, it may take quite a long time before the states can replace the revenue they've grown accustomed to. Most of the states have a balanced budget amendment so it looks like deep cuts still in the works.

These fiscal conditions should make for some good fishing expeditions. wink

NYC

My father has been driving for six years and I just recently have my license for a few months. Here in NYC we dont have speed cameras and neither one of us have ever been stopped for speeding. We have a few ocasions we red light cameras but thats about it. I often do not even have the chance to speed even if I wanted to when there's a cruiser on the side because traffic starts to move very slowly.

Effective Jan 1, 2010, Georgia has a "Super-Speeder" law. Over 85 on Interstate or 75 on secondary roads, and they tack $200 on to your fine. Doubt that even this will improve the dismal state of GA finances, but the threat seems to be enough to slow the traffic on I-75, and I've noticed much heavier enforcement since the bill became law....

Factor in your actual operating costs and your time and your risk factors and you'd save a lot more money by either moving closer to where you work, changing your job so you work closer to where you live or by simply working from home.

Given that my commute is less than 10 miles, my savings would be negligible, even annualised.

Keep up to date with rhe speed traps here:

That's the best reference I've found short of local folks spreading the word.

Actually, keeping your RLC/Speed Cam file from POI Factory is the best way to keep alert. I've looked at that site before - in my area, most of the info is a couple (or more) years old, and typically consists of someone who happened to get a ticket at a particular place once, and it becomes "cops always hide at..." I'm familiar with all of the locations reported for my community, and in 20 years of residence, I can't recall more than a handful of times I've seen speed enforcement at any of those locations.
