Playing MP3's with the Nuvi 660

This has never worked for me with the skips, but with the new software or firmware up grade for it I thought I'd try it again today. Well the skipping was cured, that worked to well. After I turned the MP3 player off the next alert turned it on again. Finally I had to quit and reset the destination.
The other problem that I had last year was a terrible high pitched whistle that changed with the RPM's (attached to the AUX port on my '07 Camry). This was quieter this year with the Nuvi upgrade, but not silenced. I'm wondering where the feedback is coming from. Would a shielded cable to the AUX port help? I'd appreciate any ideas on this problem also.

Alternator whine

I've a 660, and we've used music off cards and listened to FM and internal speaker, on both a 98 Saturn and 99 Maxima, and not encountered any skips or alternator whine... Alternator Whine... That is what you are describing....

This is probably due to a 'Ground Loop' that is occurring between the DC ground potential difference of the Power (Cigarette lighter ground) vs. the ground on the AUX Input of your radio...

I never even knew the 660 had an audio output.
Try not powering the Garmin with Cigarette lighter power.... Bet whine goes away....

I'll bet if you switch to FM reception of audio, this will go away.... too.

Ground Loops are a bear to fix...

Good Feedback

Thanks for the feedback. I knew I held off installing that upgrade for a reason. wink

Any other 6xx user seen this "new" problem?

Good Feedback

At one point, I had my 650 connected to an aftermarket stereo via the headphone jack on the unit and the RCA aux input on the stereo and never experienced any interference. I also never had any skipping or playback problems. The music would pause each time directions or other alerts played and would then immediately resume.

Try a different cable

I occasionally had that problem in our RAV4 (whining would increase with a faster RPM). Our Toyota dealer could find nothing wrong.

The problem disappeared when I replaced the generic audio cable with a "branded" cable from The Source.

V4.8

I've installed V4.8 last weekend... Had no issues with it.... Again, I believe you're encountering alternator whine from a ground loop.

I'm old enough to remember 8 track players in cars...
Ran into this then.. Engine speed related whine...
Can happen in multiple ways, but basically it's either charging spikes riding in on +12 power, or.... difference in potential between two different grounds.... Power ground vs. audio ground... (In this case -- aux input ground)...

To prove this is happening.... Remove power from garmin, run on internal battery.... Whine should be gone.

Way back when, we'd get a big filter choke, and put an electrolytic cap on either side of it... on the +12V feed to the 8 track... to Filter the Charging spikes off the DC Power... It helped...

Whine

I run my 660 in three different vehicles with the power cord installed in the cig liter and never had any whime. Only had the music jump one time when it was interupted by an alert.

Is there a way to play mp3

Is there a way to play mp3 from the gps to car stereo system?

My car has RCA connection. Right now I connnect Sandisk mp3 to the car via RCA cable. I want to eliminate one more stuff in my car.

I haven't tried to listen mp3 directly from the divice but I am sure the sound is not good.

Mine is 255W if that makes any difference.

MP3 player

Ron, I don't believe the 2x5 series has either a line out jack or MP3 player. The 7x0, 7x5, 8x0, 8x5 nuvi's have these features. There are probably others too, but not 2x5.

Thanks for the correction.
