POI for Gun Ranges USA

I would like to start a POI for GUN ranges in the USA.
I have a few started for Tennessee and I see another or 2 in the POI files here.
I would like to make one for all the US since you can shoot in most states as you travel.

So If you know of one that is open in your area Please email the info.

I would take them from the net but I can not confirm if they are open/current or not.

Gun Ranges

I think you've got a good idea. The problem is that many of them are "Member Only" and you have to pay annual dues to join. I belong to two and neither will permit the public to shoot. It may have to do with insurance.

Yes, good idea. Good point too.. so maybe just include the non-membership ones if they don't allow 'walk-ins' even for a fee?

It's about the Line- If a line can be drawn between the powers granted and the rights retained, it would seem to be the same thing, whether the latter be secured by declaring that they shall not be abridged, or that the former shall not be extended.

Idea for Someone with Good Programming Skills (not Me)

Gun ranges is a good idea. Even membership only ranges tend to have ways for travelers to take advantage of them ($$$).

I wonder if it's possible to write a program the queries Google for gun ranges, uses the address to reverse look up GPS coordinates, then creates the POI table. This could be used for almost any POI.

Just a thought,
Jen

there is but..

Jen, yes there are a few ways to do that but I agree that a personally verified list is a better way to do it. (Also see the post here about 'POI Accuracy for reasons why).

But I'm sure if we all submit our own known good locations & details, we could have a super-nice detailed file in no time!

My wife, age 64, just started target shooting and is very, very good. She has a carry license and would be happy to have such a POI.

Great idea but.....

Be careful crossing State lines with a weapon. There are some States with very strict gun laws and you could end up in the slammer !!!!!!!

I have 4 POI's

I have 4 POI's with gun shops, ranges, accessories within Canada and the US.

I will upload them shortly.

Not if you comply with the federal Firearm Owner Protection Act, i.e. FOPA. That allows you to pass through states such as NY/Illinois and areas such as DC with firearms. Even ones illegal in those states/areas. Just have to be good to go (legally able to possess) at your starting/ending point, can't stop "long term" in the offending state/area and you must transport them unloaded, not easily accessible, etc through said states/areas. wink

There is an article in American Rifleman magazine this month that reports how people transporting completely legal hand guns have been arrested in both New York's LaGuardia and Chicago's O'Hare airports on a felony firearms possession. After getting a lawyer they bargained it down to disorderly conduct. Just another way for gun hating politicians to harass gun owners.

Most ranges in my area that are open to the public charge about fifteen dollars or more a day to shoot. My son belongs to a range in Baraboo, WI that is about ten miles from Wisconsin Dells, a huge tourist area that people from surrounding states will spend a week's vacation. There are three stores in Baraboo that for thirty dollars you can get an instant years membership complete with a key and a membership card. The range has trap, skeet, and 25, 50, 100, and 200 yard ranges. Is this something you would want to include in your POI?

Hand Gun Permit

This map is good to use to determine which states accept your handgun permit. Just select the state that issued your permit and if it is a resident or non-resident and it will show the states where it is accepted.

I would need the format, etc. never did it before.

NRA source

The NRA has a resource that lists clubs and "Places to shoot". See https://explore.nra.org/programs/clubs/. Once at the site, scroll down quite a way on the page. The downside is some of the places don't show a physical location but instead use a post office box.

I have a concealed carry permit in PA and used to take my target pistol with me when traveling. I no longer do so due to the confusing and constantly changing state weapons laws. There are too many cases of law abiding citizens getting into serious trouble while legally carrying their firearms.

I understand that these anti gun laws are designed to protect law enforcement officers and the public. Still, it's a shame that so many legal gun owners get caught up in the technicalities of these laws.

Not necessarily

Maybe…quoting from https://chuckfranklinlaw.com/interstate-travel-with-guns/

“The Firearms Owner’s Protection Act (“FOPA”) allows an interstate traveler to cross state lines with a gun. But, in order for FOPA to apply, the traveler must legally be allowed to possess the weapon in the state he or she is traveling from. The same is true for the state of destination: the traveler must legally be allowed to possess the weapon where he or she is traveling to as well. As long as those two requirements are met, a traveler should be allowed to cross state lines.”

FOPA was specifically addressed in a recent gun safety course I attended in Pennsylvania. When a similar question was raised, I think “Can I drive from Philadelphia to Chicago with my gun, the answer was “yes” if you are licensed in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois, all the states I would likely pass through in driving.

When I purchased my handgun I wanted to make the purchase at a Cabelas in Delaware to save the tax. I was advised by Cabelas to hang the handgun unloaded from my rear view mirror on my return trip to Pennsylvania. Simply placing the gun in its box in the trunk or glove box would constitute carrying a concealed weapon, something which at the time was illegal in Delaware. I also did not have any form of Delaware permit although I have a concealed carry permit for PA.

All of this of course points out the need for a universal Federal set of gun laws.

A Long Time Ago

My post has little to do with the subject at hand but seeing the thread pop up about firing ranges brought to mind my firing range experiences. The first and last times I was on a firing range was decades ago, in 1967 at Fort Polk, Louisiana, as a private in Army basic training with an M14 rifle.

I never owned a firearm until the time of the death of my father who owned a 22 rifle and a 410 shotgun. My father mostly used the 22 rifle to kill hogs on the farm with shots to the forehead. Usually we processed two hogs yearly at hog killing time, usually early to mid winter. We salt cured the hams, shoulders and middlings (bacon portion)and hardwood smoked the meat after a couple of months of salt curing. The 410 shotgun was mostly used to kill wild rabbits and squirrels, that we ate.

Upon my father's death, my sisters persuaded me to take possession of his guns. The guns have been sitting in my home closet for years with no use. I have no ammunition. I really have no use for the weapons except for sentimental value. In retrospect I should have let the guns be sold along with the rest of my father's estate.

In today's world ...

Delaware is an open carry state, that means you can openly carry a firearm without a license, with some exceptions. You can open carry in a vehicle, but it must be visible from the outside of the vehicle, that's why Cabela's told you to "hand it from your mirror" although most folks just place it on the dash or passenger seat if no one is in it.

Delaware does not issue a license to carry a firearm to non residents, although the state attorney general can issue a non-resident permit, but this is strictly for a limited period. Delaware does not recognize the PA License To Carry Firearms (LTCF, what PA calls the license/permit), but they do have reciprocity with many states, and they do accept non resident license from the states they honor. Utah is one such state. As a PA resident I can carry in Delaware because I have a Utah Concealed Firearm Permit (CFP). I also have my PA LTCF, between the two I can legally carry in 32 states. An excellent website for learning state handgun laws is: www.handgunlaw.us

I'm not sure if what you did "at that time" could be done today. I know here in PA a handgun can be bought by a non resident, but would then have to be shipped to a licensed dealer in your home state where you would then follow that states laws to take possession of the gun.

One last little nit picky thing, technically you didn't 'save the tax'. PA has what's called a use tax, basically it mean PA taxable things bought outside of PA but for use in PA are required to have the PA sales tax sent to the state. I bought a motorcycle and a Jeep in Delaware and both of the dealers took the PA tax and paid it.

Quote:

"Use Tax

Out-of-state businesses and Internet vendors often falsely advertise that they sell taxable items “tax free”. However, Pennsylvania law requires the payment of use tax by any person who purchases taxable goods or services delivered into or used in Pennsylvania if sales tax is not collected by the vendor. Use tax is the counterpart of the state and local sales taxes.

When Pennsylvania sales tax is not charged by the seller on a taxable item or service delivered into or used in Pennsylvania, the consumer is required by law to report and remit use tax to the Department of Revenue. The use tax rate is the same as the sales tax rate: 6 percent state tax, plus an additional 1 percent local tax for items purchased in delivered to or used in Allegheny County and 2 percent local tax for Philadelphia"
