Removing custom POI's

In order to remove you custom POI's from your unit, Garmin tells you to do the following:

You must have the latest version of the POI Loader installed onto your computer. Then, follow the steps:
Connect your unit to the computer
Open the POI Loader program
Click Next on the first screen
On the next screen the program should auto-detect your unit, make sure the correct unit is selected, then click Next
On the following screen select Remove all previously installed custom POIs from your device, then click Next
The program will display: To re-install custom POIs you will need to run the POI Loader again. Are you sure you want to proceed?
Click Yes.
A message will display: Congratulations you have successfully removed all custom POIs from your device.
Click Finish.

The Custom POI's have now been removed from your device.

Not really. What Garmin does not tell you is to remove the SD card in your unit prior to starting this process. I learned the hard way after numerous attempts to delete the custom POI's -- they would never delete and it drove me nuts. Before inserting your SD card back into the GPS unit, modify or delete the old custom POI's from the card. Otherwise, there could be a conflict and or the POI's do not match and alerts are not popping up.
I informed Garmin of my findings, hopefully they address this or add this info to their support website.

I've never had any problems

I've never had any problems removing (and re-adding) POIs with my SD card inserted in the slot and I can install them anywhere I want to, SD card or Nuvi internal memory.

Perhaps you have POIs installed in one place (SD card or Nuvi internal memory) but when going through the removal process you happen to pick the wrong memory location.

no need for remove card notice

Actually you can delete Poi from the SD card by choosing the card on the dropdown list on the screen where you “Select the device……”.

Since you can choose either the GPSr or the card in it, there is no need for them to tell you to remove the card.

POI Loader deleted the Custom POI from your GPSr exactly as you instructed it.

If you delete POI from the GPSr and leave the ones on the SD card, the unit will not transfer POI data from the card to the GPSr if you answer NO to the question “Would you like to install this data ….” that appears when you restart your unit.

If you say No, the POIs will still appear under Extras->Custom POIs, but they will be being read from the card.

removing custom poi

i remove these files by simply looking on my sd or in my nuvi (look for the file ending gpi) and clicking delete. no need to run poi loader. both sd and nuvi show up as drives in your window explorer

That works too

Yes, that works too and is the only way to remove any POIs in files named other than poi.gpi because POI Loader does not remove them in spite of reporting “You have successfully removed all custom POIs from your device.

POI loader “removes all POIs” by making poi.gpi an empty file. It leaves any other *.gpi files undisturbed.

But how do you name them other than poi.gpi?

I currently have 7 poi files, some .gpx and some .csv. When I add a single one, what ends up on the Garmin is poi.gpi. No matter which one I add. If I add more than one the size and content of poi.gpi changes after each addition and only contains the last file I added. I can add all 7 by picking the directory just above all the poi files. But I still only end up with a single file named poi.gpi.

HOW IN THE HECK do I add them individually so each shows up as a separate file on the Garmin?

What I do...

Rename your poi.gpi file on your GPS (or SD card if you use that):
Example - Rename poi.gpi to Walmart.gpi
Then rerun POI loader with your next poi file and it will create a new poi.gpi.
Keep renaming as needed.
Also I use sub folders under the main POI folder on my GPS for each new set of POI's and move them there.

Flash Drives also can be used

You can even use a USB flash drive as a "Custom Folder" when using POI Loader. I often use a flash drive as a staging area to create poi.gpi files, rename them to othernames.gpi and then copy the ones I want to use at a particular time to my 255W.

I posted on previous thread

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/26734

I use the renaming method with a little twist. When running poi loader, I select Custom Folder (instead of Garmin Unit). I save the poi.gpi in the same folder as the source csv/gpx/mp3/bmp files. I then rename to poi Redlight.gpi. I then copy to nuvi. This also allows you to create without the nuvi.

I use this for my alert and tourguide files that have to be loaded in the manual mode. It is simplier for me than having to ignore all non-alert pois when running poi loader.

I tend to update different files at different times. It is easy for me to track when each was updated (by date on poi Redlight.gpi file).

It is also easier for me to use this method to load to other gpsr. I have tried sd card but don't use now. It is simplier for me to just load to nuvi.

Hope this helps - there are alot of ways to do it.

Sometimes it's easy to look past the simple solution

I tried a lot of things, but not the simple, obvious thing. Thanks a ton for all your time.

just delete your from the SD

just delete your from the SD card

POILoader creates POI.GPI...

regardless of whether you let POILoader operate on one file or on several files.

As others are indicating, you may rename POI.GPI to WHATEVER.POI and then, the next time you run POILoader, it will create a new POI.GPI file which you can rename to SOMETHINGELSE.GPI. Your GPS is happy because it is looking for files whose extension is .GPI.

Remvoing Custom POI's

Can you remove just one category of custom POI's without removing all and reinstalling the ones you want to keep?

Remove the file from your

Remove the file from your computer and run poiloader and it will overwrite the existing ones.

Load a category and rname POI.GPI

One way to accomplish what you are after is to begin loading each [Category] one at a time. Immediately after running POILoader, go to the the X:\Garmin\POI folder (where “X” is the drive assigned to your GPS when it is connected to your PC)and rename the POI.GPI file to [category].GPI (where [category] will be replaced with whatever name you wish that describes your POI file.

Run POILoader again and load another [category]. Repeat the renaming of this new [category] untill all your files are loaded.

Now, whenever you want to remove (or replace) one of your files, go to the X:\Garmin\POI folder (where “X” is the drive assigned to your GPS when it is connected to your PC) and delete the [category].GPI file you are removing (or replacing). Then run POILoader to create a new POI.GPI file and then rename it to whatever you wish (of course using the extension .GPI)
