- Added symbol replacement function. You can replace only if the size (in bytes) of the new symbol is smaller than the original. It may be a different dimension, but I have not tried it yet. Let me know if you do.

- Added RGN file save even if your source is a GCD file. Not possible to save as a GCD file for now. Once
done, put your gps in pre-boot mode and use update.exe (not supplied) to program the new firmware.

- You can use this program to convert the firmware from GCD to RGN. It has been tested with many firmware.

Yes, it does not work on the nuvi 850. I added the 8x0 family in the non-working list.

Symbols replacement is not for the weak at heart! LOL! If you read the readme.txt file, it says if you do not know what update.exe is, you should not try this.

No offense intended to anybody. This is delicate work. I would not want anybody to corrupt their gps with bad firmware.

I will give you more details when I am back Sunday. By then, I should have received more detailed feedback. The pre-boot mode procedure also differs from one GPS to another. I need to make research on how to do this for the 765.

I do not know. Just try it and let us know. If you see a list of symbols, you know the program can extract them. Otherwise, the program will tell you it cannot find any symbol.

BTW, the list of "non-working-gps" just means the program cannot find any PNG symbols in there. They are probably bitmaps without headers which the program does not recognize at this time.

I'll continue to work on this. My hope is to extract also the other BMP symbols, which should make the program works will all gps.

I am so excited by this utility! Wonderful idea! I have been tinkering all weekend with it, but am a little confused. I know there isn't help for replacing icons, so I would like to help out to show my thanks! I would like to help you share this cool proggie by assisting with a tutorial for replacing the default icons. But I have some questions.

I am not new to using updater.exe and flashing firmware w/o the online garmin service, however I seem to get no results upon replacing the icon files with my custom icons. I am only using symbolextractor to customize my favorites icons.

I can extract the data, save a new rgn file, open and view it correctly on the PC (though the file name changes from the orig pic name to a placeholder serial #) so I guess all is well.

I then updater.exe with the file I created (newicons.rgn) and nothing happens. Do I need to name the new file something like the 082701000640.rgn or is the name irrelevant? because this seems to not work either.

If anyone can push me in the right direction, I'd like to continue the help by making a how-to w/ screenshots to let all the world see how awesome this app can be!!!

I just downloaded the tool and I will play with it first change I get. One quick question; is the startup splash screen image easily available? I want to keep the original startup screen and make some changes to it. On the older StreetPilot C550, the startup splash screen is in the Garmin directory and can easily be edited. On the 765, it appears the splash screen is in the firmware and there is no copy available that can be edited. The splash screen can be changed to something else easily enough but that original image just isn't around.

I have used the prog with success on ver 4.2 firmware rgn.

But, when I try using it from the 6.4 gcd from garmin web update, I can't reload with the resultant rgn file symbolextractor creates. It seems to install, but the unit reports back system software missing. The only thing I can do is reload version 4.2.

I was thinking that the problem is in the conversion from gcd to rgn. Does anyone know how to convert a gcd into a re-installable rgn? Or know how to get a rgn for the latest ver?
