Nuvi 765 Symbols - Wanna see them?

I have made a little program to extract all the 858 symbols from the nuvi 765 (probably applies as well to the entire 7x5 family). They are so niiiiice! It includes the following symbols: all POIs, weather, traffic, navigation, menu, etc...

I cannot post them for copyright reasons, but I can make the program available if there is some interest.

The next step is to allow someone to replace one symbol by another one of the same size. Sounds cool?

In the meantime, here's the link to the SymbolExtractor:

I can't believe no one else has posted on this. This is HUGE. Turbo, I'd love a copy despite the lack of response to the thread so far.

Thanks again for another great concept taken to fruition!

Sounds just great, let me know when you move on this.

858 symbols for the nuvi 765.

Requirements - Read this *****************

In order to run the program, you need to have access to your nuvi 765 firmware. Do you have it as a .RGN file or a .GCD file?

For now, I extract everything from the .RGN file. If you do not have it, I will make the tool convert the .GCD file to .RGN.

Let me know.

absolutely

GCD (only?)

I have it as .gcd only as far as I know. I think most users would only have it that way unless they were.. um.. experimenters?

Then again I'm not that deep yet into the files on the nuvi, myself.

xImage

ryaxin wrote:

Good question. I was not aware of xImage before you mentionned it. I looked at the summary description at Garmin and it looks very cool.

So far, my program just extracts the symbols. They are rather big, so I am not sure if other smaller bitmaps are also stored in the firmware.

First thing: you extract them and let me know (I do not have a nuvi 765) what you think. Next step, we can try modifying one and see how it goes. I will also have a closer look at xImage, but since I have a 760, it would be better for someone having a 765 to look at it. Link to Garmin xImage is here:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=545

I just need to make a little more code to support a GCD input file. I've done it in the past. It is just a matter to C&P the code and I will be ready to post my program. Probably later tonight.

Tonight? Sweet!

We'll all be looking for it. grin

Will it work for other nuvis?

If so, great, if not, what are some of the reasons? Potential future versions....?

Awesome contribution nonetheless!

Symbols for other nuvi units

schmidwr wrote:

The symbols are easily visible in the 765 firmware. It searched but could not find them in the 760 firmware. I need to dig a little more to find them.

Whoa, cowboy!

no worries...

Mine is a 750, so I was just hoping in this order that a) it would work as is, b) it would only be a simple tweak to work for other nuvis and c) major work. I can certainly be patient as this new ball gets rolling!

thanks again Turbo!

schmidwr,

d) it will be a simple tweak once I find them! smile

Link is in first post!

Thank you for your patience. It took me 20 minutes to complete the program and 90 minutes to create a logo for it... LOL! and it sucks a bit! I am not good at this.

Ok. Link is posted in post #1 above. Enjoy!

Turbo

ahh, dude!

Thanks so much. I'll play tonight!

First thing I've noticed...

It would be nice to have a "Save As" to put the extraction files in. The x:/Garmin/ folder is not optimal as you have to cut and paste to a X:/ drive location. No biggie though.

Interesting to see the files are in .png format. I'm glad I have Photoshop. wink

Thanks for the prog!

I would definitely be interested in this!

Save to another location

Yes, I will add that. I was just a bit lazy.

In the meantime, do not open the GCD file directly on your gps /Garmin folder. Copy it to another location on your C: drive. It will be much faster and your will have more disk space. There is a lot of files...

Works for me

It works for me on my 765's gupdate.gcd but as you expected Turbo, it didn't work on the one from my 200W.

Is there an associated 'index' number or anything with these (in the unit?)? Does it appear that we can reference the waypoint symbols by using the text following 'BMP_SYM_' through EPE? Anyone try yet on an unusual one?

As I recall, I never got xImage to work for much of anything, but it's been a while and I didn't dig real deep. I thought I saw docs somewhere that it was only for older units that had a built-in ability to down/upload waypoint images.

Dunno, but just got a new laotop with it. I'll try it this week end.

Is there any error message?

Is this Windows only? If so, hoping there is a Mac developer out there that wants to do the same thing...

Windows only! Sorry!

I am really not in the Mac business. Someday, I'll have a Mac emulator on my PC, but I'll have to rewrite all the code since Mac does not like MS Visual Basic.

ERROR message reads...

Now that I think of it, 'TABCTL32.OCX' is not used with SymbolExtractor. Are you sure you got it using it? I looked at the program and could not find any reference to it.

I will be releasing today a new version and you will have included symbol preview.

v1.10

I just posted v1.10 which now includes the list of all included symbols, a symbol preview and the ability to save one or more symbols in a specified folder. No symbol replacement for now.

What is the link to the new version?

I tried to use the Garmin ImageX software and was unsuccessful. I also see that my nuvi 850 is not listed on your update.

What does the Garmin ImageX software have to do with this? Have you read the Symbol Extractor instructions first?

Garmin image software

The software was listed in the string above as a means to view the icons.
