How do I change WPT symbol in GPX file?

question I'm loading multipule POI files on a Delorme Street Atlas 2010 (& 2009) map. Is there a way to change the symbol so at a quick glance (i'm using the GPS on a motorcycle), to identify and seperate Diners Drive-Ins & Dives, from Route 66 indicators/

Dale Ty

USE EPE

Use Extra POI Editor and do a bulk replace on the Symbol field.

more questions

I can find under TOOLS Batch reverse Geocoding & Batch Geocoding..

Under EDIT - REPLACE FIELD the drop down box has SYMBOL listed, but I have no idea what teh NEW-FIELD-VALUE would be, or even if this is correct?

What/ which do I use??

When you load a file to

When you load a file to EPE.Double click one of the custom pois and it will take you to the next screen.Under display preferences you will see symbol with drop down selection. You can add different symbol to each poi.

Using the replace field under edit allows you to add a symbol or other selections to every poi at one time. For example I select proximity and under field value I put 8000 and click replace all. That gives me alert distance for every poi on the list.

Symbol change

Thanks ! I wish to change ALL the symbols in the POI file. Where would I find the NEW FIELD Value to replace all.. I figured that out .. Thanks again !! I'm changing the wpt symbol to the Green Flag.

Load the file to EPE and

Load the file to EPE and double click on one of the pois.Go down to symbol and select from the list the one you want to ue for replace all.Remember the correct spelling. Now go back to first page and then go to edit and click on replace field. Once the next screen comes up use the down arrow for Field name and pick symbol. Under new field value type in the symbol name Then click replace all. You now have symbol set for each custom poi. Then save as a gpx file. You will lose the built in symbol if you save as a csv file.

Proximity Alert

,,, then what happens while doing routing and a prox alert pops up when you are near a turn, etc.. I'm using a 2820 Garmin as my main GPS. So if I'm routing thru St Louis, and a routing change (turn or exit) pops up and a Prox Alert pops up at same time,, which takes priority?

Not sure if there is a

Not sure if there is a standard answer for that.I have had a alert message go off and when the turn comes up it cut off the proximity alert message.

If you plan to use built in alerts using EPE here is the process.

You can download Extra Poi Editor at http://turboccc.wikispaces.com/Extra_POI_Editor and build the distance in for the alert. When you download the program if you get message about OCX file missing scroll down on the main page and under troubleshooting you will find the Extra Poi Editor Installer that you will need to download. Once installation is completed you will need to set up the preferences you want first. Under options click on preferences. For example using ft for input. Under units you will see editor, select Imperial/US. For Field Read select metric and Field save select Metric. After setting your preferences click on file and click open to select from your computer the file you want to build the distance alerts for. Then go to edit and click on replace field. Once the next screen comes up use the down arrow for Field name and pick proximity. Under new field value put in the distance in feet you want for the alert. Then click replace all. You now have distance set for each custom poi. Then save as a gpx file. You will lose the built in alert if you save as a csv file. The nice thing about this method is that you can use express mode for poiloader.

Unless

Unless you save as an "M-column" csv, yes? (I mainly save as gpx so my memory is foggy).

Btw, my Excel add-in will let you do 'bulk' changes in a spreadsheet environment and send the M-col csv to EPE from within Excel. Also opens a gpx in Excel & converts it to M-col.

If you save a GPX as an M-Column Excel file using EPE, you can extract the symbol information, but POI Loader only uses 4 columns of a CSV. Symbol, along with display are some of those neat fields in a GPX that is unavailable in the CSV format.

Doh.

Got ya, & understood. I was thinking he was implying you loose the edits. They do save in M-col but POI loader can't use them. Too early this am.

H-D POIs use Garmin's Custom 0 symbol

I don't know Delorme products. I build the H-D POIs and assign "Custom 0" as the symbol for each. In Garmin MapSource, you are allowed 64 custom symbols, 000.bmp-063.bmp, that MapSource will use for display. (Garmin POI files also have a bmp file assigned the same name as the gpx (or a csv) that will be displayed on their GPS for those Custom POI file entries. Those are not displayed in MapSource.)

With EPE, open the details on one POI and you can scroll through the symbol icons. When you select the one you want, the text will show for what you need to enter in the Edit>Replace FIeld>Symbol entry. I like to also Replace Field on the Display field and enter "SymbolOnly" so the names don't cl;utter up my maps. YMMV with Delorme.
