csv file / Mac POI Loader

Newby here and to GPS. I have a Garmin 2720 and use a Mac computer.
I've downloaded the new beta releases from Garmin and the updater works fine. But in trying the POI loader I'm having a little trouble. I downloaded some POI's from this site and they come in csv file.
Now...what do I do to get the csv converted or whatever so i can load them onto the 2720. I currently have them in TextEdit.
Thanks

How very simple once l found someone that knew the answer. I'll pass it on in case others may need it.

{On 2720's with the new firmware, the path to custom POI's is: "find - extras - custom poi's". A few firmware revisions ago, they were moved from "my locations". Hope this is helpful.}

Thanks to those here that offered assistance.

Doesn't Macs have a program

Doesn't Macs have a program similar to Excel? You should be able to use that.

EDIT: OMG!!!!! What I said made no sense at all!!! LOL. I was at work and concentrating on something else and must have totally misread this thread. Anyways, ignore what I said and read above.

You should be using POI Loader to move the .csv files from your computer to the GPS. It reads both .csv files and .gpx files.
There is a beta POI Loader available from Garmin for the MAC.
Place the POI files that you have downloaded into a folder on your MAC. Connect the GPS to your computer and run POI Loader. It will ask you where the files are stored and then proceed to load them onto your GPSr.

My first computer was an Apple-IIc - I even added 128k of ram to give it a whopping 256k. But I was too cheap to spring for the 1200 baud modem...used a 300 buad modem to dial Compuserve long distance...

Since then, I've been seduced by the dark side...My next computer will be a Mac... smile

After you've transferred custom POIs to your GPS with POI Loader, they can be found at this location:

Pdf Version

You should have a separate tab that says "Custom Poi's"

If that's not there, give us step by step of what you are doing and results/error messages you might be getting.

Jim, can you copy and paste a couple of lines from your poi file you are trying to load?
I didn't catch what you used to create the poi file..ie notepad, excel etc.

Shoot, I just saw you're using a Mac...maybe it's got something with the loading part. I understand there is a Mac version of POI Loader. Maybe check for any updates to that.

In the mean time, maybe some Mac users can jump in...Motorcycle Mama?? Where are You??

Hopefully, it's just something going on with the MAC poi loader. Apparently you're not getting any load errors...are you?

Web Updater works fine. Poi loader installed recently. Software up to date on unit.
I guess I need to know what to do after l download the poi. I tried putting them in a folder on the desktop-that doesn't work. Seems like I'm missing something.

Did you run POI Loader?

Jim Stephens wrote:

With the .csv file in a folder on your MAC, did you then run POI Loader. I assume the MAC version works similarly to the PC version. Once it connects to your GPS it will ask for input at to where the file (folder) is located. Then, it will proceed to load the POI's into your GPS.

See posts above. Is there a special sequence to downloading the poi, plugging in the gps, switching it on, etc.?

When you hook your 2700...

...to your computer, do you see it available as a mass storage device? If you do, then you are good to go.

You need to have the POI-csv file(s) downloaded and saved previously somewhere on your computer...then hook up the GPSr, and launch POI Loader...then use the loader to browse to the folder you saved your POIs previously, and then select your unit in the appropriate place on the POI Loader, and let it do its thing - then, you should see what you just loaded on your GPSr as I described above.

Should I get this using a Mac? Don't recall seeing any such, but will check.

I think this is pretty much what I've done before-gonna try again

poi's, 2720, Mac

Just tried again. I did not see info re storage device. Launched loader, it asked for and recognized gps. Found the folder and downloaded.
Pane on POI Loader says: Congrats! You have installed xx pois on your sp2720, unit id xx-----.
I go to gps and select Menu>Where to>My locations> and l get Favorites and Coordinates bars, no poi's.

And...THE ANSWER IS:

On 2720's with the new firmware, the path to custom POI's is: "find - extras - custom poi's". A few firmware revisions ago, they were moved from "my locations". Hope this is helpful.

If this is correct, will you make the correction for the 2710 under GPS Models?

Mac POI Loader

Hello,

I tried the beta version of the Mac POI Loader but I always get an error. The beta version of the webupdater works fine though. I am using nuvi 350.

I then tried loading my customer POI using a PC and it worked ok. So, I guess the beta version of mac poi loader is not good sad

After loading my custom POI to my nuvi, it asked me if I want to save it to my nuvi? I replied No. So, right now, it stays in my SD card. I am not sure if answering YES would override my pre-programmed POIs.

thanks!

Answering Yes

It should add them. However, I keep some POIs (those with alerts) on my GPSr and the others on the SD card. You will get the question each time you start to GPSr unless you select YES and then check the box to not ask the question again and also select the button to SKIP the upload. (convoluted)
You will not get the question again unless you add new data to your SD card and/or update the firmware.

It is correct for the 2720; l tried it as soon as l got the info. I can't speak for the 2710 as l got an answer from another board specifically for the --20.

Slightly different problem....

I have a zumo 550 and mac poi uploader. When selecting a file to upload, the csv file is greyed out and I cannot select it. Any thoughts?

"NEW" Mac POI LOader

Just downloaded latest version 2.0.0.1 of Beta Mac POI LOader for use
with my SP C330

Same problems I had before - it recognizes my Intel based MAC mini with 10.4.9 OS but says it "cannot communicate etc, etc, etc " even tho the Webupdater beta works GREAT !- no problem communicating! Also
communicates fine with Google Earth !
Will fire off another note to Garmin Tech Support

I use friends PC (ugh) laptop to load my POI's now !

I'm not sure about the Mac version, but on the PC version you point POI Loader to the FOLDER that your POI file is in. Not to the FILE itself.

Got it. It even says

Got it. It even says "Folder" not "File". Works fine. It's hard to make these things too idiot proof.

My version from Garmin's web site is 2.0.2.1, your's is not the latest. Check again, it works without any problems. I use a Mac Book Pro and a nuvi 660. The only problem I have, sometimes when plugging in the 660 it does not show up on the desktop, no matter what, until I restart the computer, then all is well again.

Ken's post was made back on 04/28/2007. It's good to hear that the newer version works well.

Can't load the POI Rest Areas (newbie)

I am new to the Garmin (260W) and to POI Loading. I downloaded the file for Rest Areas which came as: RestAreasCombined.csv.txt, a text edit file.
I ran POI loader and got the following message after doing all the navigating:

It is the only file I have tried to download and install. I haven't a clue to what's happening except I can't load the file onto the Garmin.

Glad you fixed it. Only Mac users see the extra extension. The maintainer of the file has been advised of the problem but . . .

Miss POI, maybe you could open the file and re-save it. I am relatively certain that will solve the problem until it is updated again.

Just delete .txt suffix

jcraig250 wrote:

The easiest thing to do is to just highlight the file, delete the txt portion (leaving the .csv suffix). When the dialog box asks if you want to change the file type, click "Use .csv"

removing POI's with the Mac POI loader

does anyone know if you can use the Mac POI loader to remove POI's from the GPS or does the WIndows version need to be used?

sjtaggart wrote:

Hi sjtaggart,

It's simple...
Just remove the POI you don't want to load, from the folder you use to upload your POI's. Then run the POI Loader.

HTH (hope that helps)

sjtaggart wrote:

You can use the Mac version of POI Loader (at least the beta version) to remove all of the POIs on your GPSr. However, as Tailspin pointed out, it is not necessary, if you are planning to continue using any POIs; loading POIs via POI Loader overwrites the POI.gpi file that currently exists on the GPSr.
