Next map updates

I just got a Nuvi 765T refurb.

I have until February 23 to run the map update.

It has map version 2010.10

Is this the latest version?

Is a new version expected before Feb., 23rd?

Thanks for any insight.

Hi,

2010.30 was release Nov 19, 2009 and they release up to 4 versions per year. I would say, "Keep an eye on the Garmin Site, here and on the Calendar.

I would expect them to release something around Feb/March time frame but that is purely a guess on my part.

Do you have an URL for locating the latest version at Garmin?

surprised This looks like good timing on Garmins part. All those new GPS units given as Christmas gifts will have their 60 day update run out just before the next map update. rolleyes

I have registered my device and explored those pages. All they say is 2010, no version number given.

My map is 2010.10. I'd like to see somewhere on the Garmin site what the latest version is so I can monitor for newer versions before my free-update expires.

So, where on the Garmin site can I find the version numbers?

Login to Garmin.com
Got to My Garmin
Click on the MyDashboard TAB.

You must have the Garmin Communicator Plugin installed and the Gamin Unit connected to your PC.

You should now see if a Map update is available. If memory serves me correctly, you will see the version here.

then click mymaps. For me, at least, I find several maps listed for my nuvi, the most recent being:

The nuMaps Guarantee provides for a single map update within the first 60 days after the initial satellite lock, if a map update becomes available during that period.

If no new update is released in that 60 days, then you already have the most updated maps available during your purchase period.

https://my.garmin.com/maps/nuMaps.htm
Guarantee applies to one Garmin nüvi or zūmo unit. Not transferable to any other person or product. You will qualify for the free map update only if (i) you register your nüvi or zūmo online at http://my.garmin.com within 60 days of first acquiring satellites while driving with your device, and (ii) a newer version of the map data was or becomes available for purchase from Garmin’s website at any time up to 60 days after first acquiring satellites while driving with your device. You will not qualify for the free map update if you register your nüvi or zūmo with Garmin by telephone or more than 60 days after first acquiring satellites while driving with your device. Limit of one free map update per unit.

map update expiration

It was reported on another site that if you register your unit on my.garmin.com and a newer map is available for your unit, that you will be given the opportunity to download that newer map. The download will have an expiration date less than 60 days. If you don't download before the expiration date, you will lose your chance to get the free update even if a newer map becomes available within 60 days. If that is correct, playing the "waiting game" could bite you.

Does anyone know if this is correct? Is the solution to not register until you are near the end of your 60 days from first lock?

I tried the MyGarmin > MyMaps route and it only shows the version currently on my 765T, 2010.10, nothing about the version to which I can upgrade. When I follow the Free Update Available button, there is nothing indicating the number of the newer version, but I assume it is newer than my existing 2010.10. date the unit first acquired sat lock not the date you register

juststarting wrote:

The date that Garmin uses for the 60 day trigger is the date the unit first acquired sat lock not the date you register. When you register the unit has to be connected and the actual sat lock date is read by Garmin to determine if the unit qualifies.

Waiting to register won't help. The date that Garmin uses is the initial satellite acquisition date.

However, it is advisable to wait until near the end of the 60 days to get and download the map update just in case one is released in that period.

i would download now. there won't be that much change in an update. there will always be errors that will show up. you still have to use some common sense. it is a tool not AI. don't believe it and go somewhere that looks impassable

That's nice, but HOW did you find it? I have seen at least a half-dozen posts showing the latest version, but nobody seems to know of a place on the Garmin website where this information can be found directly. Could it be that the only way to truly determine the latest version is to perform the update, and then check what is on your GPS unit?

The latest update is 2010.30

I just purchased a 755T and updated mine with the latest software to 2010.30. Th free update is only a one time update. If there is another update that comes out in the 60 day window, I believe you will have to pay for it. At least that is what I gather from mygarmin.com site.

The my.garmin.com site will always show you if there is a newer version available than what you currently have installed on your GPS unit. Just plug your GPS unit into your computer and log in to the site.

It will also tell you if it is available to you for free or at a cost.

As noted above, the latest version for North America is 2010.30. It was released in November 2009.

I have v. 2010.10

I have registered my device.

I have gone to MyGarmin, connected the device, gone on to Dashboard and it says I can update, but it doesn't say what version it will give me.

Since I can't find a version number and none of the suggestions have worked for my unit. I guess I will just have to call Garmin, wait through an hour's worth of Musak and try to pin them down.

In any event I plan to do the update no later than about 3 days short of the end date for me (Feb., 23).

Thanks to all for the attempts to help.

Why call Garmin? If you have 2010.1 now and Garmin says you have an update available, it'll be 2010.30...at least until a newer update becomes available. Why suffer through the Muzak? Don't expect (or if offered--don't trust) anyone telling you when the next version beyond 2010.30 will become available to see if it'll meet your window of opportunity--this includes Garmin's tech support staff.

.

Yeah, I'm not sure I understand what the problem is.

You say you have 2010.1
The current version is 2010.3
If you are eligible for (or even purchase) an update download from Garmin, you will get the latest version available at the minute you download or purchase it which happens to be at this very moment 2010.3 Period.

Not sure what the issue is.

question...

when was version 2010.10 released?

I bought my 765T from Amazon. The email ad was for a refurbished unit. The web page it linked to had an option listed for "New". I clicked on that and ordered the unit. I asked about the other option on that page "refurbished" they said that was refurbished also.!!!!

I tried my GPS Christmass day...so it seems I have 60 days after that to update my maps. Oh well, live and learn.

Garmin registration date.

As soon as you activated your Garmin, that date was set into a file on your GPS. That is the date that Garmin will use for Map update eligibility not the date you register with Garmin.

I would certainly complain to Amazon about the "wordplay" the vender is using.

"NEW" is not "Refurbished" in the eyes of the FTC.

If you have the lifetime maps subscription it wont cost you anything. If you dont then you will have to buy it when they come out with the next update which is only once every 12-15 months.(give or take some)

The 60 day update is based on the date the GPS first locked onto the satellites. It does not matter when you register, so there's no need to wait.

...

Go to this link: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=1456&pvID=30132&ra=t...

Click on the View Map tab and then click someplace on the map. The pop-up window will display the current map version available.

A particularly handy feature of this page is that you can zoom and pan to a location to determine if new street additions, road changes, and POI meet your expectations before you purchase - assuming you're not exercising the nüMaps guarantee or lifetime subscription.

franzey wrote:

If purchased separately, the price of the update is also listed on this link as $99.99 - MSRP - better street prices can be found online. Makes the nüMaps Lifetime at Amazon for $79 rather attractive for those who really want to update their map.

The latest version is 2010.30

The latest version is 2010.30

Don't wait

The map guarantee is counted against the first satellite fix date, not your registration date so 2010.3 will be the map you will get. Even if 2010.4 is released within 60 days of your purchase, you will not get it unless you never turn on the unit.

Jeff

.

Well, this comment is slightly inaccurate.

Yes, it's the first satellite acquisition date not the registration date that is used to determine the 60 day period.

However, in the (unlikely) event that 2010.40 were to be released in that 60 day period AND IF the user had not already downloaded the 2010.30 update, the user (if eligible to begin with) would, in fact, be eligible for the 2010.40 update.

Map updates & 255W turn on problem

Food for thought. I bought a 255W on black Friday at Staples (14 day return policy). It had turn on problems and I exchanged it. Just to be sure the exchange did not have the same problem I registered it, updated the software and map and even loaded and tested poi Rest Stops (first forte into pois). AOK. Thanks to all who contributed to Rest Stops.

When a map update comes

When a map update comes along, how "old" is the data (ie. it represents a database snapshot from X days/weeks/months prior)? Do they use the NAVTEQ database?
