POI Updates in Garmin Map Updates?

This has probably already been covered but I couldn't find the answer.

How does one determine what POI updates have been included in the Garmin map updates?

Is there an easy way to compare one map update to another?

I ask because my new Nuvi 1250T with the latest 2010.3 map update seem to be missing POIs and have some very old obsolete POIs included.

An Easy Way - No

You're right, this has been discussed before. If your looking for "a list" of changes - no. An easy way to compare - no. Garmin (Navteq) has never published a list of changes but it is a valid question. confused

People want to know if they buy a new map, will it have the changes that are important to them. smile

The closest you can come to answering your question is to go to this page on the Garmin website and click on the "View Map" tab. From there you can zoom in to specific areas, move around and add more detail to the map view. neutral You have to look for yourself, unfortunately.

POI updates

I have found that NavTeq is not the quickest place to log changes to POI's. In fact, I have submitted road changes to NavTeq and they are still showing the same roads with no changes. Some of these changes were submitted 2 years ago. There are places on my maps that have been closed for years, yet they are still listed in NavTeq's data base. This is one of the many reasons I use the POI Factory. The changes are made quickly once the file maintainer is made aware of them. I realize there are some POI's that will never be published due to the regionality or the size of the POI, but all in all POI Factory is the best place to obtain a lot of this information.

No Easy Way

You would think they would be more forthcoming with what is included in the map updates. Sounds like another case of Buyer Beware.

I am really happy with my Garmin. I guess I will pass on any map updates until I can “see” them.

This is the information I needed.

Thanks

You can view the new map

See the new map here assuming you're in the USA or Canada:

Lol, guess you will never update. You want them to list that they now have a Dunkin Donuts as a poi? Map updates certainly are primarily for accuracy of roads. (They don't list those either) While of course we want updates to poi's, why would not knowing what those updates are keep someone from updating their roads?

If you are waiting for a specific update that you don't now have, look it up and put into the GPS....

Easy to do?

How easy is it for any company to keep track of all newly created roads, company's etc.? I would imagine this is a full time task that Navteq incorporates into their maps and from what I gather based on all the documentation I have read, there will never be a perfect map.

I've recently updated to the 2010.30 map and have found some errors as well, most being POI related. I've had several locations open for 2 years and they are still not referenced on the map, although a search for that same company does yield other locations close to where I am.

We must also make note, that not all locations will ever show up on a Navteq map as we are limited to 6 million POI's alone.

This is where the POI factory comes in.. smile

Updates

It seems to me the POI updates are very slow from Garmin.

POI updates

If either Navteq or Garmin were to come up with a list of all the changes to POIs on the latest update:

1. What would be the starting point for the listing, the first map update issued or the last map update? The number of entries in either case would be VERY substantial. Would you be willing to go through a list of 100,000 entries looking for your local McD's?

2. The changed location of your local McD's may have been included on the update before this one. Would you complain if it wasn't listed on YOUR update listing?

3. How do you know that the listed change is for the current address? Do you want them to include addresses in the change list?

Be careful what you wish for, you may get it and find out that it is useless.

Do it yourself...

I agree 100%. In any case, the GPS unit does give a decent amount of locations for a specified POI and as another user pointed out, if it is not on the GPS, then seek it out on the POI Factory and install it yourself. I've already done this for a few businesses and it works out very well.

Slow to change

I have just switched from my 2 year old Nuvi260 to a new Nuvi 265WT. On my old unit when I use the installed POI file from Garmin to do a search for "fast food" it shows a "Harvey’s Hamburgers” near where I work that has been closed for 4 years. When I do the same search on the new unit, there is the same "Harvey’s Hamburgers". I would have thought that this would have been corrected by now.
Some of the others quirks are not really Garmins fault. I live in a suburban area and browsing the map on the unit I saw the "tow truck" icon on a house in a residential street. Apparently this is the address that the business is registered at, not the actual location of the company.
