This really is an outstanding unit for the price.

Has anyone had any lockup issues with this GPS? Looks like a great deal!

I personally have not had any issues. However, there have been reports of this. It seems to depend on the particular unit you receive. It may be that there are flaky units floating around. A hard reset may sometimes alleviate it. If not, there is always the option to return/exchange for another unit, either to the reseller or to Garmin direct.

If you know someone looking for a new unit, this seems like the deal to recommend.

In the last month, I've had it lock up once as I drove down the road and had about 5 different POI's fire off at once and it try to give me directions at the same time. However, I'm new to the POI world and have been tweaking my alert proximity distances, so I feel it was more user error than system.

I'm tempted but have a question that I bet someone can easily answer:

I have a GTM-20 with a paid lifetime Clear Channel traffic subscription and see that the 855 uses the GTM-20 for traffic. Will my paid traffic transfer to the 855? In other words, does lifetime traffic reside within the GTM-20 or with the GPS?

Obviously, I'd need to buy a new numaps lifetime map update subscription if getting a new nuvi so it'd cost me $240 to get the 855 with lifetime maps--plus MAYBE the cost of traffic.

The GTM subscription is contained within the GTM unit. Any GPS that the cable itself will connect to (via the cradle mount) will work with your GTM and it's subscription.

Note that the cradle itself (where the 12v GTM cable plugs into) is different between the 7x0/7x5 series 8x0/8x5 series and the nuvi 5000 so the cradles are not interchangeable. You cannot attach a 8x0/8x5 unit to a 7x0/7x5 series or vise versa.

I have been here and done things similar to lock up the unit. I agree it was probably user error. Alert overload..... After adjusting alerts no more problems.

The 855 is a very good unit.

Thank you, D-N, I somehow figured yours would be the first reply. That's the answer I thought I had read before but I was too lazy to search the archives...or maybe I was hoping no one would respond so I wouldn't spend more end-of-year buck$.

So, thanks to you, I've once again spent a bunch of cash on a GPS and lifetime maps. At least the GPS and numaps were simultaneouly on super sale (and thank goodness my current GTM-20 traffic will carry over).

I went for the slowest free shipping option so it'll be interesting to see how long it takes to arrive. Before New Years?...

CraigW, DorkusNimrod seems to have that effect on many of us. I just dropped $260 for the 855 and lifetime maps too! I think Garmin should give D-N a commission, don't you? But thanks as always to DorkusNimrod for providing no-nonsense factual information about Garmin products.

The cradle that comes with the 855 is 100% compatble with the GTM-20. It's the traffic I use with my 855. the transition should be very smooth.

hanski9, do you use the ad supported Navteq free lifetime subscription on the GTM-20 with your 855? If so, do you get the popup ads?

I bought the lifetime traffic. Retailed at $120-ish, but I got it for $62. I do not get any ads.

I guess we need to be glad D-N got us off our butts yesterday--the GPS is $30 more today while the map continues to be at the recent great price.

Commission? I figured D-N was the CFO/COO/ITChief/Whatever of Garmin--how else could a mere human know so quickly when Garmin maps, software and firmware become available?

Whew, even with my least-fast Free Shipping option for my Amazon GPS/Map order placed yesterday, I see that it was shipped USPS yesterday from just 125 miles from me. There's a chance it may arrive yet very soon. Thanks, Amazon.

I don't think ad-supported traffic is an option here with the 855.
