Another Gamin user has been snatched up

A buddy of mine has been looking for a gps.
He was talking about a few others..but I convinced him to go with a garmin.

Got a call from him while he was at Fry's..they wanted 349 for the 765t. (He said he had to call his gadget consultant.. grin )
I told em NO!! Tiger direct has it for 209. Price match it!
They said they would...but no 'manager' to 'approve it'.
So..he went to TG just a few miles away and picked it up.

Lets put it this way..He going from a 2 year old Megellan to a 765T. He was getting tired of 'driving thru fields' since they extended 355 out here. grin

We have another convert to Garmin. grin

This is great - now all you need to do is to get him over to the POI Factory.

I am curious as to why he selected the 765T over the 1xxx series.

Tiger direct

I didn't know Tiger Direct had brick-and-mortar stores...

Tiger Direct (Brick and Morter)

Tiger Direct bought all of the old Comp-USA stores. Some of these still have that name, others were named "Tiger Direct"

They are only located in some areas of the U.S. (Mostly Major Cities).

Hope you find one near you.

Wish I didn't find one near me

Actually, they didn't buy ALL of the old CompUSA stores, they sure didn't buy the one in Raleigh NC. And Raleigh already had a Tiger Direct brick and mortar store, and charged sales tax when you tried to order any Tiger junk mail-order as a result. However, they have now rebranded that old Tiger Direct store and call it a Comp-USA store!

One should be aware that Tiger Direct, under whatever name they are currently calling themselves, doesn't always have the greatest of reputations. Here is just one example:

Quite frankly, I wish they would leave my city completely, it would help make the market more attractive to some other store. Any area can only support so many computer stores, and Tiger/Comp-USA being here may well be keeping a decent one out.

Websites Are Identical

I was searching for a particular computer monitor today and came across the tigerdirect site. The next one in line on Google was the comp-usa site. Both were exactly the same design except for the name and get this....the price. Not sure if this was an oversight on their part, but with comp-usa's prior problems with pricing I wasn't too surprised. I wonder why they don't just kill off one of the sites?

Told em..

Yes..I've already told him about POIF..
I suspect he will register soon. He's not much into posting to forums, but perhaps a renewed interest in geep'susususus will get him going.

That is the case around here..they have 'gone compusa'.

Interesting.. I was unaware of this.
Yet..This is DELL we are talking about.. wink
Briefly, according to the article, I can see how TG was skirting things.
Selling 'old' gear as new? Well..It was 'new'(in a box, never used), but was last years model perhaps? Sorta like selling a 2008 car as 'new' in 2009.
Dell's warrenties? Whats with that? Such things should start at the 'date of purchase', like everything else, as opposed when dell says so.
And this? Coming from a company that will void your warrenty if you open the case, change the OS or breath on it incorrectly. Yes..I have a whole bag full of dell horror stories. Both consumer and corporate. On the corporate side, I 'lobbied' to get dell kicked out of our company for a list of reasons. And won. They suck.

I wont continually debate the TG/Dell thing..but suffice to say I think I see where both sides are coming from.

My personal experience with TG has been positive. I've bought alot item from them and have taken advantage of their guarentees.
I bought 2 28' in monitors. Brought em back due to dead pixels. They let me de-box new ones so I could test them with my laptop running a dead pixel tester. (Dell's policy is that you have to have X dead pixels before you can exchange it). TG? Nope, they let me test another monitor to confirm it was 'perfect'. The sales guy agree'd "Even one dead pixel sucks" smile
I even bought two nuvi's there. One was not in stock and had to be shipped. But because I came to the store, and they didnt have it, they didnt charge shipping.
I bought a 52' sharp aquo LCD tv(great price!). Dead pixels. I went thru 2 of them to get one that was good. No problems with exchanges.
BTW..I perfer local stores for things like LCD's. Because they are notorious for dead pixels, I like to have the option of just jumping in the car and exchanging them.

Recently I bought 4GB of corsiar xm2 memory. I went there based on their web site. They didnt have in the store 'exactly' what I wanted. So I went with the xm2. It was more expensive than what I wanted to pay. But grabbed the xm2. I asked one of the 'agents' about the memory I wanted, he saw the xm2 I was holding and said. "That xm2 is 67 bux". That was 25 bux cheaper than what was listed!! BONUS! It rang up in the system at 67. No propblems (It was just labled wrong on the shelf).
I was VERY happy!
I also got TWO liton dvd burners with litescribe..for 8 dollars. heheheh. It was in the system with a deal. I didnt even know it. BONUS!

I'm not necessarily 'defending' TG/compusa..but I've bought lots of toys from them, and it has always been positive.

Dell on the other hand..has always sucked..at the consumer level to the corporate side.

Just my .02

I've seen that happen here as well.
Its no biggy really. If you go to the store and mention it, they will most likely match it. If not, get it from the other store.
Months ago, when they were going thru this transition, I talked to em about it. And one of the sales guys said that 'they should do a better job of tracking their pricing'. (shrug). You just have to be aware of it. Always check their web site first. Yet, it seems (in my experience) if a price was 'less than the shelf price' it will ring up at the lower price.

Never had a problem with Tiger Direct

I have bought online, plus they have a local store (Naperville/Chicago) where I buy, too. Always had good service and pricing. After the CompUSA buyout, the local store now has the CompUSA name on it. Never really cared much for CompUSA. Now, it's just a name. My impression was that they bought the rights to the name and only 15 of the stores because it was more well-known than their own.
