How to get free traffic with nuvi 650 & gtm 20 traffic receiver?

If you recently purchased the traffic receiver, a complimentary 15-month subscription is included. I don't believe that there is a free lifetime subscription available. You can purchase a lifetime subscription through Navteq for only $60.00.

Thanks for the quick reply. So how do I enable the 15 months traffic? It doesn't seem to do it automatically. Well if u don't know that is ok.

When you have the GTM-20 plugged into a working lighter socket and you have the nüvi turned on, if you select Tools, do you see a button that says Traffic. On mine, this button is only there if the GTM-20 is working.

If so, touch that button and look to see if it sees any data.

Hi, yes after I click the wrench icon I do have the yellow traffic icon after it is plugged into the outlet in the car.

I click it and it says " a subscription has not been activated. Activation will occur automatically after your unit acquires gps satelites while receiving a signal from the traffic provider." I then click ok then I see two lines both saying "new subscription" both are in a white rectangular box.

And on the bottom of it there is the back button, add button, and up and down arrows. If i click the add button it says "before proceding go to wwww.garmin.com/fmtraffic to obatain a traffic subscription code. The web site will ask you to enter the unit I'd of ur fm traffic receiver."

so what's up?

Then, you do the on-device routine again and enter the code that the Garmin web site will have provided.

. . . follow the instructions.

So I went there the price is 49.99 For the premium subscription by navteq but I thought I the traffic receiver has the free lifetime traffics w/o a subscription?

By the way is the premium the free lifetime traffic which I need to buy to get the free lifetime traffic?

The latest nuvi 650 firmware (system software) is 4.70:

Check yours: Tools>Settings>System>About and look at the "Software Version" number.

If you're current, the problem is likely that the nuvi's firmware does NOT support the free Navteq traffic...the free traffic relies on advertisements. The nuvi 650 CANNOT display those ads. This is why it will not work.

You will need to purchase a Lifetime traffic subscription that is NOT ad-based. The $60 Clear Channel or the $50 Navteq subscriptions (not ad-based) should work just fine. I would recommend the Clear Channel subscription since it's coverage is alot greater than Navteq's...and it's only $10 more.

I called Garmin about it and the support was really clear and helpful the 2nd time that I called.

What I needed to do is to wait for the firmware/software update so the yellow traffic icon will enable my free lifetime traffic subscription.

Garmin support said my traffic receiver is by Navteq and it does provide the free traffic lifetime but for some reason my nuvi 650 did not activate the subscription automatically so they will have a firmwar/software to activate my subscription.

Here is what they said, "Just an FYI – that after Christmas a software/firmware release will be made to correct the glitch where your Traffic icon states a traffic subscription has not be activated."

Hopefully after Christmas this will solve the issue after I download it.
