FM TRAFFIC OR MSN DIRECT?

I recently purchased a Nuvi 255W and my daily travel time to work is usually 1 hr-1.5 hrs. around 40 miles each way. Would it be wise to purchase either FM Traffic or MSN Direct? if so, which one would be better suited for me?

FM traffic would be a smart

FM traffic would be a smart choice since you pay only one time and signal send by radio station so it won't be outdate or disconnect anytime soon.

MSN direct, I'm not sure but service provide will be disconnect anytime soon since not much people subscribe to them.

MSN Direct..

I was under the impression (from reading many posts here), that MSN Direct was going away in the next year or two. Here's a link to the info.

That being the case, I would think your only viable option would be to go with FM traffic.

I'm not really lost.... just temporarily misplaced!

I wouldn't say it was a lack of people

The bulk of MSN users were Garmin owners. The 1690 is the first of a wave of new units that will use the cellular network to provide traffic information. With Garmin changing from an FM radio based service to cellular, MSN decided to get out. The other FM services all use ads to supplement the subscription fees.

Not if the traffic service subscription is a paid subscription. Only free traffic (Navteq free service) relies on ads. The two paid subscriptions (ad-free) in the US are:

Clear Channel: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=268&pID=36805

Navteq: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=268&pID=36804

I have both Clear Channel and Navteq limetime traffic

I have both Clear Channel and Navteq limetime traffic subscriptions on my traffic receiver and neither one has any ads at any time.

is a paid subscription - the same as MSN. If the traffic receiver was bundled with the unit you would have ads displayed without a subscription.

This will vary...

Scenario: You can have a GTM 2x that came with free (ad-based) Navteq Lifetime. You purchase a Clear Channel Lifetime subscription (sub) with no ads.

In use, the sub used by the GTM 2x is the strongest when the initial channel scan takes place. If that sub is Clear Channel, you will never see Navteq ads.

If however your location changes to where a free Navteq sub is dominant, that subscription will be used instead of Clear Channel and you will again eventually see the ads.

In my use in the SoCal area, both of my GTM 20s have both Navteq (free) and Clear Channel (paid) subs on them and I have never seen ads displayed, because of the dominant Clear Channel sub in my area.
